Next generation of the D2 pilot watch series

With the recent announcement of the Fenix 5 series of watches, it seems highly likely that there will be a new release of Garmin's pilot watch D2 series, based on the Fenix 5. And given that one of the biggest complaints with Garmin's D2 Bravo (the latest in the series) is the lack of a basemap it is seems a foregone conclusion that the next generation of the D2 series will be based specifically on the Fenix 5X hardware (which comes with a basemap).

Although Garmin's Portable Aviation group are not active here in the forums per se, I do know that they lurk and read the forums on a semi-regular basis. With that in mind I would like to compile a list of features that we (the collective Garmin aviation users) would like to included with the next generation of the D2 pilot watch series. I will bug my contact at Garmin once in a while to remind them of this thread and hopefully we will see some of our input converted into actual features on the new watch.

The compile this list, I need your input so please reply to this thread with your thoughts (point form or paragraph or whatever) and I will continually compile the results, similar to what I am currently doing with the D2 Bravo bug and feature request thread. For best results please include the watch you use now, whether or not you are likely to by the next D2 series, the type of flying you do and how you use the watch day-to-day.
  • The following is the compiled list of feature requests for the next generation of the D2 pilot watch series:
    • Fly app should have a basemap (with country borders, country labels, main cities, lakes and seas, like in the original D2)
    • Watch should have configurable aviation units (for aviation functionality), for use in metric countries (like Canada)
    • Watch should work properly with the Garmin "tempe" (external sensor) to allow for proper density altitude calculations
    • Watch should have a "UTC" watchface, where the large, main time displays UTC (once a pilot starts planning, everything is UTC until shortly after shutdown)
    • METAR widget needs to be able to ignore non-aerodrome METAR. A use case for this would be in Canada where there many WX stations with only wind/temp readings which the METAR widget picks up and displays (eg. CWXA), but the information is of almost no use without sky and condition information
    • METAR widget needs to be able to pull nearest METAR when airport entered doesn't have a METAR (eg. CYCZ in Canada doesn't have a METAR)
  • Current watch: D2 Bravo
Next watch: Will likely purchase the next D2 series if it solves the metric issues
Licence: CPL (Canada & USA, with Part 107 for drone flights)
Type of flying: private, commercial, drone
Day-to-day use: flying, running, hiking, activity (step) tracking

The biggest issue with the D2 Bravo for me is the inability for the watch separate out the use of aviation units (knots, SM, feet, inHg) for aviation functionality and use metric for everything else. The D2 Bravo it is my primary timepiece and I currently use it 24/7 for everything. And because I live in Canada, I have the watch set up for metric units for my runs, hikes and other activities. However, the watch currently assumes that because I have metric configured that I want to see metric for aviation functionality also. That means that distances (such as for 'Nearest Airports') show in kilometers, ceiling heights (such as in the METAR widget) and elevation (in the Fly app) are shown in meters, etc. Although I fluently understand metric, seeing aviation information in metric doesn't make sense for pilots in Canada.
  • Current watch: D2 Bravo
Next watch: D2 series or Fenix
    Licence: PPL (USA)
    Type of flying: private
Day-to-day use: flying, running, biking, activity (step) tracking

I agree with all the features requested above. I would like to see the following additions:
    - The possibility of size options (i.e. having Fenix 5/5s as base) with a basic base map (like the original D2 which is based on Fenix and I don't see why it's not possible on F5/5S).
    - Adding mapping capabilities when using F5X as the base such as airspaces. F5X has 12 GB memory, so this should not be an issue.
  • D2 Next Watch

    Hi there,
I'm back after a year off this forum...

I agree with dbrobert (thanks for this thread) and ghost_rider_av8or.
I know there are a bunch of pilots with the same requests.

    I will reiterate important points:
    - Basic basemap (countries names and border, lakes/seas, main cities) on the D2 based on F5S/F5 (if it exists) + the airport database
    - Advanced basemap (with areas, even maybe runway length and type so as to filter runway on the Nearest function, maybe frequencies).
    - A proper flight plan transfer function (going into a specific app for that is suboptimal - you should be able to transfer to the watch while it's navigating without trouble of changing apps or you will never do it).
    - Satellite radar view (sometimes it's useful to see what satellite data is received with which strenght, so as to position the watch properly).

I then have ConnectIQ requests, for the D2 Bravo and the future D2 based on F5:
    - GPS elevation needs to be provided as a separate data : currently any CIQ app/datafield cannot access the GPS elevation. Whenever I fly a pressurized aircraft, the app is useless because it shows me the cabin pressure altitude. Which is great information to have (don't remove it), but WE NEED TO KNOW THE ALTITUDE OF THE AIRCRAFT!! <- this is the most important of all.
    - Having both GPS altitude and pressure altitude helps compute an approximation of DP (delta pressure) which is can be useful.
    - Access the current flight plan and the current waypoint, else it is impossible to display them as on a datafield, and a full app has to be coded instead.
    - Give CIQ apps access to the airport database (input 4-letter code or location and output 1 airport or the 20 nearest airports or the 20 large nearest airports depending on need)
  • It's funny that Garmin posted this ad about the existing D2 watches this morning on Facebook: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/blog/aviation/d2-aviator-watches-which-is-right-for-you/

When I asked them last week via email, they did not answer my question instead they said the new Fenix watches will not have aviation apps.

I really hope that this article isn't an attempt to reduce speculation on a new watch and to instead ensure continued sales of pilot watches. However, if it is the case that there won't be a pilot watch based on the fenix 5 then I really hope that Garmin puts some resources into continuing to fix the D2 Bravo.

I discovered last week that the built-in METAR widgets only displays the first six (6) periods within the TAF, which I suspect is related to the TAF reboot issue introduced in FW 3.10. While six periods might sound fine for places with good to fair weather most of the time, it's not uncommon for Canadian stations to have 10 or 11 periods during our winter season. For example, right now CYYQ (which consistently has over six periods) has seven periods and earlier today CYHZ had nine periods:

    TAF CYHZ 131145Z 1312/1412 09030G40KT 1/4SM -SN BLSN VV003 TEMPO 1312/1315 3/4SM -SN BLSN VV007 PROB30 1312/1315 1/8SM +SN +BLSN FM131500 08030G50KT 1/4SM +SN +BLSN VV002 PROB30 1315/1318 1/8SM +SN +BLSN FM131800 06030G48KT 3/8SM -SN BLSN VV002 FM132200 03030G43KT 3/4SM -SN BLSN VV006 FM140600 01025G35KT 2SM -SN BLSN VV012 FM141000 35020G32KT 3SM -SN BLSN OVC020 RMK NXT FCST BY 131500Z

If I am able to display all the periods with my METAR/TAF widget, I'm not sure why Garmin can't figure it out.

    Cheers,
    Douglas
  • Somewhat related, I've created a Facebook group for anyone wanting to discuss Connect IQ apps for use in aviation. The group is open to D2 Bravo owners, developers, users, avgeeks or anyone else who wants to talk about using Garmin's Connect IQ tech to build (or use) aviation widgets and apps. You can reach the group here:

    http://fb.me/ConnectIQAviation

I'm not a big Facebook user but I will likely post more stuff there as there are no limits on image uploads and such on FB. Plus it's a space to call our own since we don't have our own sub-forum here within Garmin's eco-system.

    Cheers,
    Douglas
  • Garmin announced the next generation of their marine watch today, quatix 5, which is based on the fenix 5. I think it's safe to speculate that the next generation aviation watch ("D2 Charlie"??) is on the horizon also.

    Cheers,
    Douglas
  • Fingers crossed. D2 Bravo Titanium was released May 16 of last year.

    New infos?

Does anyone have new informations or speculations about the next D2 generation?
The D2 Bravo isn't anymore an option. In my mind still the choose between buying a F5X or wait till-don't know-when for a D2 "Charlie".
    What's your mind for?
