Garmin MARQ vs. Luxury automatic watch

Hi,

I have the MARQ Aviator and I like it very much, recently I even purchased several more straps for it for different looks.

However, I’m considering purchasing a nice luxury Omega automatic watch (~5000$) which looks very nice IMO. However, I'm afraid I won't wear the Omega as much (since I'm so used to the smartwatch features in Garmin). What do you think? Do you still wear your automatic watch now that you have the MARQ? When do you wear it? Is it still makes sense to purchase an automatic ("old technology?") watch those days?

Would love you hear your opinions.

  • I am in the reverse situation, I love my Breitling Aviator and am worried about getting the American Magic as I wonder if I would ever wear the Breitling again.

Maybe around home, but when traveling I suspect I would not even bring it.  So for those of you that have a couple of nice watches what is your experience. And why not just load a pure analog watch face when you want to go back to simplicity?

Actually is there a way to have the Garmin schedule an event? I am thinking data during the day when I need to pay attention to emails and at night analog?

  • IMO Garmin MARQ tried to address that void, the desire for a nice watch with "smartwatch" capabilities.

The MARQ looks almost like a real luxury watch,  but IMO it still not 100% there. I'm really attached to the feature it has which is in another league compared to a regular watch. But sometimes I still want the beauty of a real watch...

    Hard to choose...

  • I've had a Omega Seamaster Professional for 15 years.

Until buying a Garmin watch, I'd worn it all day almost every day, including doing diving, sailing, drinking, fighting (only joking).   It's been great, virtually indestructible and the battery lasts about 7 years. The strap has a little extension link that you can use to wear the watch on the outside of a wetsuit. Back on land, it still looks great, almost as good as new, and only the luminous dots have faded slightly.  I also have a gold chronograph version for special occasions.

Since buying a Garmin watch, however, the Omegas have languished in a drawer.  I've hardly worn them at all. Now I simply can't live without Garmin Pay (I no longer go out with a wallet most of the time, not just on exercise) and really appreciate having all-day calorie and heart rate monitoring. What really makes it indispensable outside of workouts though is the smart messages: I find I can stop embarrassing myself in meetings because I've left my phone on. Now the phone is kept on silent and my wrist just buzzes discretely when somebody texts or calls me.  It's so useful that even when there's a special occasion that would previously have called for the Omega, I find myself sticking with the Garmin.

I brought the Seamaster for £1,200 and it's probably worth at least £1,000 today, according to my local jeweller. In today's money, a new equivalent Seamaster costs about £4,000.

The Marq by contrast isn't realistically going to last more than 3-4 years.  Thus whilst it's cheaper to buy, the Marq probably works out more expensive per day, although not massively so, and you probably will use it for more things during the day.

I bought a Seamaster because I think they're beautiful, I appreciate exquisite engineering and it suited my lifestyle, not for other people's opinions.  Still it's nice when other people notice. That's quite rare with an Omega though because they're relatively common. I'm still sometimes tempted to buy another one as the latest versions are more beautiful still. I'd hardly ever wear it though. It seems so old-fashioned now.

By contrast the Marq is up there with an Omega in terms of build quality (perhaps not with the very latest but getting close) but it is much more distinctive and unique. Add to that other innovations like being able to change the straps easily and for me now it would be the Marq every time.

  • What MARQ did you get and the blue face on the omega is beautiful.  I think it's why I'm so drawn to the American Magic (even if I am cheering for the NZ team)

  • I am cheering for the NZ team

Maybe Garmin need to consider producing a variant for each team :-)

  • Black might look good but I love the blue,  reminds me of the James bond omega's

  • physio trueup works well. One option if you do not want to loose your stats for a day is to purchase one of the garmin vivosmart 4 bands. You can wear it on the other wrist and still be able to enjoy the mechanical piece of your choice.

  • I have the athlete and i just bought the titanium bracelet from Garmin that is used on the Aviator but can be used on the Marq. It really makes the Athlete look quite nice

  • Which of the 2-3 with a silicone backing or without?
