Expedition no longer shows resting heart rate. I am using the current FW.

Initially, my watch showed resting heart rate, but has not done so for the past week. Has anyone experienced the same issue? The stress score also rarely shows.

  • Mine seems to be working fine.

Thanks for the response, Reuben. I am pleased for you but disappointed for me. Have a great rest of the weekend.

  • Try to (hard) reset the watch ...

  • First try what is technically correctly called a "Hard Reset", where you press and hold the Light button (for 20 seconds, ignoring the Assistance Alert stuff) until the watch powers off, then restart.  That is a bit like rebooting a windows PC after an update and often clears funky behaviour on Garmin watches.  If that doesn't work, then you may wish to try a "Master Reset" by going to Menu>System>Reset>Delete Data and Reset Settings.  This should put your unit back to a factory default state (so a bit like completely resetting windows to a clean install on a PC).  If all that doesn't work, then get in touch with Garmin Customer Support (they'll ask you to do the Resets mentioned, so you can save some time if already done), to trouble shoot anhy possible hardware issues.

Thanks for the kind and informative responses. I have performed a "Hard Reset" and the "stress" measure worked fine for a few minutes. Then I tried a manual test with the result that three times produced the message "check watch fit." That happened with the previous Expedition as well. I paired my phone again but the same result occurred. The resting heart rate does not show on the watch or on Garmin Connect. Perhaps I don't understand how the stress function works. Maybe it is only functional at certain times. Perhaps the same is true with the resting heart measurement. Perhaps I need to connect my watch to my PC and let it update that way. Mind you, when I did that, the program interfered with the hibernation feature of my computer. As long as Garmin Express was on my PC, the system hibernated every four minutes.

Finally, this is no way to enjoy a watch, regardless of the price. I like the way it looks, but I wanted more than a decoration. I understand the watches work well for you. I'm just not fortunate enough to be a member of the club.

    Enjoy the day.

When I turn off the watch, then turn it on again, I receive a stress score, but then it doesn't show up again. If I try to do a manual measurement, the phrase, as stated earlier "check watch fit" is presented. Is there a way to have the stress automatically checked frequently? I must be missing something here.

I have performed two more hard resets and the resting heart rate problem continues. Also, if I take my watch off for a few minutes, and then put it back on, I will get a stress measurement. However, after that, I do not receive another measurement. Also, the stress number shown in Garmin Connect is not what was shown on the watch. I like this watch and will probably keep it, but I wish someone at Garmin or elsewhere could come up with another possible solution. And, as stated, if try to take a manual measurement, I always receive the "check watch fit" message. Ah well.

  • Having done all of those Resets, and assuming you've covered off all of the fit and band tightness recommendations here https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=xQwjQjzUew4BF1GYcusE59&productID=633626&tab=topics&topicTag=region_heartratesensors , then it's either a hardware fault or you may just be unlucky that your skin type or physiology doesn't work so well with wrist based optical sensors (the later is unlikely if you've had optical HR watches before and they worked fine).  I think you are best off contacting your country's Garmin Customer Support line to work through this.  If it is a hardware problem, then it would be a shame for you to continue to feel you are not getting what you should and souring the ownership experience, for want of giving Garmin the chance to sort the problem out for you.

Crispin, thank you for your time, patience, and guidance. Last week, I contacted a Garmin Support representative and he walked me through a "Hard Reset". As is always the case with my current watch, the stress measurement appeared upon the completion of the watch booting up. As discovered yesterday, if I take the watch off for a time, and then put it back on, I also receive a stress measurement, but it only shows for a few minutes, and then does not return. I don't have a tattoo and have made sure to wear the watch according to Garmin's instructions.

Now, the only exercise that I currently do is walk a number of steps each day. I include about 15 flights of stairs. After all of my comments, I'm beginning to wonder if I am expecting the stress sensor to do more than it is capable of. I know that the heart rate sensor works regardless of whether I am sitting still or walking, and it constantly checks my pulse. Is the stress sensor supposed to do the same thing or just come on rarely? Maybe that is my problem. If not, then I contact Garmin one more time before giving up on this unit.

I do not wish to continue taking up anyone's time, thus I will not initiate contact again. If anyone, however, can inform me about how the stress sensor is supposed to function, I would again be deeply appreciative.

This is the only Garmin watch that I own.

  • professorcomm,

Can you take a screen shot in Garmin Connect on what your stress score indicates throughout the day? Below is a photo of mine so far today. You'll see where it looks like there are gaps, probably because I am active during those times. When I am not too active, it takes a measurement.

I've definitely tried to look at my stress levels while I was not being active and the device told me I was moving too much, and then it still recorded in Garmin Connect. No idea why this is the case. It's the same across three different Garmin devices.

I'm wondering if yours is just not giving you a stress reading when you're looking at it like my anecdote above, but is tracking throughout the day like normal? If it's not giving you any readings during the day, that would be some sort of user misfit or device malfunction.
