Athlete - Default Watchface

I think the default watchface on the Athlete looks really good, but...

The only data field that seems to be changeable is the bottom battery/date one. The MARQ logo, HR dial and Run Total dial seem to be fixed, which seems odd as other Garmin faces let you change all the fields. I was wanting to replace Total Run with my step count, as Total Run is hardly something I realy need to be referring to throughout the day.

And, on that topic...

I kind of thought Total Run would show my last activity, but having just recorded a bike activity it still shows Total Run which is a bit useless if you don't actually run much or at all. And what does it even mean? Mine's currenty showing a 6km treadmill run which I did on Monday (on my fenix 5+), but what does the "total" bit mean - is it weekly total?

Really liking the watch so far though!
  • Thanks posting - since this is actually one of the questions I had; what actitivity summray (and vo2max) is is shown? I'm primarely a biker, so I'd like to have bike summary and vo2max. I asked DCR whether he would know, but at that time he couldn't tell.

It's a real deal breaker for me. As an athlete, as a biker, I don't care much for running (at the moment). So if this doesn't get fixed, I'm still out...

PS Sad to hear not much can be changed on the main watchface :-(
  • ‘Fixed’ implies something broken. If you want different data than what is currently available, then you should start a conversation with Garmin.

I think it's a great idea by the way. :-)

Unfortunately right now my cycling and running VO2Max are both the same, so I can't actually tell which it's displaying. However, as I've not yet found an option to change it from one to the other I'd assume it's the running one (which I think GC also uses as your general VO2Max) based on the Run Total being hard-coded. It seems a bit odd on a model targeted at athletes in general to have such a running bias.
  • Another cyclist here. If the watchface can’t be changed I will not buy it. Dealbreaker. I don’t run.

Hopefully Garmin acknowledges that not all athletes are runners...:-)

Whilst I am mainly a runner, I absolutely get the point here, as I'd find it highly frustrating if I couldn't see my running metrics on that main watch face. One thing to bear in mind, it is just a matter of changing software (there's no hardware challenge to overcome here), so if prospective buyers like yourselves keep shouting loud enough, then that might drive what I imagine is a relatively straight forward change to the default watch faces available.
  • I agree, but I don’t understand people saying this is a dealbreaker. Do people really have such a need to be able to frequently and instantly re-check how far they’ve ridden in the week and whether their cycling VO2Max has magically changed several times a day that it’s a critical feature of the watch? Yes, I hope Garmin do change it, but it was hardly on my list of “essentials” for this purchase.

I similarly question how ALL the other functionally of the watch seems to be overshadowed by the omission of bike specific VO2 Max and distance metrics on the default watch face...... except one aspect has some validity. The VO2 Max scale is physically ‘baked in’ to the hardware by way of the marks on the bezel. So it is fundamental to the outward looks, form and lifestyle appeal of the watch; and those reasons are why someone would buy a MARQ Athlete over say an unannounced, but heavily leaked and likely imminent, new plastic Forerunner tri watch. So, should it still be a deal breaker? IMHO no, as I can’t believe there will be any difficulty getting a bike version of the watch face added to a future software update if enough people scream for it (and I’m sure, in due course, CIQ watch faces will mimic the default one with highly customisable data).
  • Just take into consideration that as of today there is only one watch face that can show those metrics with arrows. They are not visible on any other watch face, even the built-in ones. I am afraid the arrows are Garmin exclusive just like wekly running distance that it is not supported by 3rd party watch faces. So if you decide to try other watch faces, the bezel markings become redundant.
  • Run Total is back to zero today so it must be a weekly total
