Does MARQ has the same screen as the Fenix 5 series?

I am wondering if the MARQ has the same screen as the Fenix 5 series? In some of the recent review vid, the screen looks really bright. It could be just the lighting.

I am wondering the same thing.

    Specs are:

    fenix 5, 5S, 5S Plus, 5 Plus and 5X Plus

Display Size: 1.2" (30.4 mm) diameter
    Display Resolution: 240 x 240 pixels
Display type: sunlight-visible, transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP)

MARQ Driver, Aviator, Captain, Expedition and Athlete

    Display Resolution: 240 x 240 pixels
Display type: sunlight-visible, transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP)

On paper they are the same, but I'd still like to see them side-by-side to be certain - and in person because photographs can be very deceiving.

  • Ultimately, without the backlight on, the display doesn't emit any light so it can't in itself be any brighter; the only things that could change would be the transparency of the glass or the reflectivity of the MiP display. On the f5, the sapphire glass is less transparent than the normal glass, so the premium glass actually gives a duller display (though this is less noticeable in brighter light). The Marq also has a sapphire glass, so is likely to be less bright than a normal glass Fenix 5, though depending on the grade of the sapphire, it may be better (or worse!) than the sapphire Fenix.

As regards the MiP reflectivity, I don't think there's much likelihood of this being higher, based only on the fact that I've not seen any mass produced transflective displays significantly brighter than the one used in the f5.
  • Actually, the Instinct has a transflective MIP display and the screen is much brighter (easier to read) than the Fenix for some reason. Maybe being black and white only and/or lower resolution play a role, I don’t really know. If the Marq display is anything like that then it will be great.

Transflective also have Fenix 5, Fenix 5 Plus so I would say the visibility would be the same, which is a bum as one of the reasons I upgraded from F3 to F5 was screen visibility. So maybe hoping for Marq to be better was hoping too much...

I understand, but what I was trying to say is that both the Fenix and Instinct have transflective MIP display. The Instinct is significantly easier to read and appears brighter. Im not sure if the tech is any different between the two, but they look completely different. I guess I didn’t explain myself very well above.
  • Can someone post an image showing the two different displays? Too greedy in asking for different lighting conditions.

    Welcome to the Garmin Forum!

The only three relevant displays I can compare are the fenix 3 with mineral crystal, tactix Bravo with sapphire crystal and the Instinct with mineral crystal.

As a note, it doesn't really make any sense to try to predict what the MARQ display will look like based on any image of the Instinct display. The Instinct display is smaller, lower resolution and monochromatic.

Second note, I don't have any fenix 5 series watches so I cannot comment on any differences between the fenix 3 and fenix 5 displays.

Left to right - tactix Bravo sapphire crystal, fenix 3 mineral crystal, Instinct mineral crystal:

My impression has always been that the sapphire crystal makes the display appear slightly dimmer. It is very difficult to get a photo to accurately show what these displays look like in real life, but this one comes pretty close to representing what I see in what would be the equivalent of bright indoor light. All three are stunningly legible in direct sunlight - such is the nature of transflective displays.

Low light is even more challenging. After several attempts, this pic best represents what I see in moderately low level indoor light:

Under both conditions I would rank them as presented from dimmest to brightest, i.e. the tactix Bravo is slightly less bright than the fenix 3 which is significantly less bright than the Instinct.

Final note, the Instinct has the absolute best LCD display I have ever seen for use in low light conditions. It is lower resolution, smaller and only monochromatic, but I guess those are the trade-offs for legibility.

  • I suppose we will have to see actually images of the displays in various lighting conditions.
  • Keep in mind that the screen itself could be the same but the quality of the glass over it will make a difference in visibility. Sadly this will be tough to notice unless you have the watch in your hands.
