Map Visualization Issue

Hello hello!

This is an issue that my Instinct has been dragging along for as long as I can remember. I was hoping for it to get solved with the various updates but, alas, as the numbers go up, it's always still here. Here's the gist of it:

Whenever I'm navigating and the course/waypoints are right in front of me, the line/icons get cut short a few pixels ahead of the arrow, as you can see from this screenshot:

(the line should keep going, but it's simply cut short and anything past that is invisible)

If instead of facing my course I turn around to the side by a few degrees, the line appears once again, fully visible

Anybody else having this issue? No amount of zooming in or out seems to fix it, nor does switching the colour scheme or fiddling with the datafields. The issue is also present in every activity type.

  • I have no such problem:

    GPS-Navigate-Courses-(TEST)-Do Course:

So I suppose it is only in the settings. What about:

Settings, Navigation, Data Screens, Map, Data Field - Off

  • The data field is already off, and I had already tried switching it on or off with no difference.

  • Please make sure your Instinct software is fully up to date and showing version 15.40 when you go Settings > About.

If you continue to have the same issue, you can try resetting your Instinct to resolve the issue. If your issue continues, also try creating your course with waypoints in different software. It could be the source of where you are creating your course that is the visual cause. If all else has failed, please reach out to your regional Outdoor Product Support.

  • Hi Chris, thanks for the quick answer!

Unfortunately, I doubt that moving from 15.10 to 15.40 will solve the issue, as I've been dragging it along since 10.x.

The issue is also present indipendently from whichever software is used to create the couse. So far I've tried with: Garmin Connect (App), Garmin Connect (Website), Garmin Explore, BaseCamp, Plotaroute, Manual import. It makes no difference to the device.

I will now try my last option and reset the Instinct, i'll keep you updated on the outcome.

  • Hello Chris,

I just went through a full factory reset, deleting all data and settings, but I'm afraid the issue is still there.

  • Did you try this thorough reset?

BTW, I still use version 12.00

  • Hey 6619804! Thanks for being here, I really appreciate the effort.
I went through with this "Master" reset this time, following the video instructions. Unfortunately straight off the bat the problem was still present and the course cut off as soon as I point the device straight at it.

I gotta admit I'm getting more and more confused by the nature of the issue: The way it presents itself and it's specificity points to a software bug, but the inability fix it in any way through any sorts of workarounds, software updates, factory resets and wipes kinda screams "hardware" issue, which is even more baffling when you consider I seem to be the only one with it.

Can it really be hardware related? Can hardwere issues ACTUALLY be this specific and only affect a single datascreen?

  • I suspect the course itself is more suspect than your Instinct. Load that course into Basecamp and check the appearance.

    Where did the course originate?

Have you tried re-creating the course somewhere different and re-adding it to your Instinct?

  • Hi Chris, thanks again for the answer.

I'm afraid issue ia present in every course. Just this morning I went trekking and loaded a new course via Garmin Connect app, same problem but unfortunately I didn't take any screenshot.

I do not think it's a course issue: even by using Sight'n Go, which plots the simplest of the straight lines, it gets cut short, but only if I look straight atit, much like any other course actual course.

Here, I'm attaching a video with a simple Sight'N Go. Made on the spot.

  • Nice short video. Thank you. Having seen the video, then going outside with my Instinct to replicate what you are experiencing, mine is working the same. After you Sight-N-Go the path, it will have you press your top right GPS button to then start navigating it. If you are referring to how the line sometimes truncates and appears more towards the middle of your display, that is normal. When you are navigating, you will still be navigated on that course path.
