Use HR only for activity

When wearing my Instinct purely as a watch on a normal day, I don't wish for the HR sensor to be on and constantly checking my HR. I have even turned off that screen on my watch face.

But when I choose an activity, I then wish for it be on. The only settings I have found for the HR sensor is Auto or Off.

Why would there not be an option of "Only on during Activity"?

Every other smart watch I have owned has that option (Samsung & Amazfit)

  • The reason has nothing to do with the battery. Not really knowing how the HR sensor works, I just think i dont need it zapping me on the wrist all day. Our bodies put up with enough crap every day, i dont need any more reasons for the body to say "hey, WTF is that sensor doin all day".

    Are you a vampire? :-)  It is a pure light that is zapping you. If that is your concern, you should stop using light bulbs at home, and walking outside in a day light (Sun's spectrum, unlike the light from the green LED of the watch, contains also the harmful UV light). And both of them (the bulbs and the Sun) "zap" you with light of several orders of magnitude higher energy.

  • Nothing about wthat you said about calories on their site. Fenix 3 dosent have hr and if you use a chest strap calories for one activity would be correct.

    :) :) :) ... very funny. To be honest i have no idea how the how the "little green lights" work in reading the HR. But if i dont need to have them on, i wont. Maybe I just need to research it a bit more Slight smile

  • The green light is a monochromatic light emited by LED's (Light Emitting Diods). It is a light of a very narrow spectrum, not containing any harmful frequencies (like the UV light), and with the energy several orders of magnitude lower than what you get from the Sun.

    For the comparison - there is approximately 1kW of energy per square meter from the Sun (it equals to 0.1 watt per square cm). The energy you get from the green LED is in the range of several microwatts (millionth of a watt). In fact it is likely around 1μW in average, or less, because the sensor emits only a very short light impulses with that intensity. It means you get "zapped" approximately 100,000 times less by the LED than by the Sun.

    That was calculated for the square area of 1 cm². If we compared the total energy you get from the Sun on the exposed parts of the body, the difference would be even several more orders of magnitude higher. If you were naked  - lets say 1m² of exposed skin (human body has approx 2m² of skin), 1 kW from the Sun vs 1μW from the OHR, that gives the ratio of 1,000,000,000 to 1
