Use HR only for activity

When wearing my Instinct purely as a watch on a normal day, I don't wish for the HR sensor to be on and constantly checking my HR. I have even turned off that screen on my watch face.

But when I choose an activity, I then wish for it be on. The only settings I have found for the HR sensor is Auto or Off.

Why would there not be an option of "Only on during Activity"?

Every other smart watch I have owned has that option (Samsung & Amazfit)

  • Why would there not be an option of "Only on during Activity"?

Because the HR is used for plenty of other feautures (burned Calories calculation, sleep monitoring, intensity minutes, stress monitoring, body battery, resting HR detection,...), and the continuous recording of HR is crucial for proper functionality. By turning the HR off when not in an Activity, you disable all that functionality, and make the reporting of Activities innacurate too.

  • That is not the q here. He/she dosent care about that.
should be a option to turn it off, why does it have auto or off? What does auto mean?

The question was "Why would there not be an option...".- so the answer is, because Garmin by allowing such option would shoot themselves into the foot, because they would get overwhelmed by support requests complaining that the Calories calculation during Activities is wrong, Intensitiy Minutes are not counted correctly, etc, etc. Hence, it is rather unlikely to happen.

  • Thanks for your reply,  but you are missing the point. For someone who doesn't car about Calories, Sleep monitoring etc etc. I just want to track my HR during activity and also to use a smart watch for all the other functions associated with having one, just not necessarily having the HR the whole time. And i don't understand your last comment. How would it make the reporting of Activities inaccurate. I want the HR on for Activities??

  • How would it make the reporting of Activities inaccurate.

Recovery time is just one example. It's uses your body battery metrics (sleep, stress, etc) your watch measures throughout the day and not just the for the activity performed.

I think you missed the point Trux was making.  Just as you didn't understand how not having all day HR turned on would make your recovery time inaccurate, Garmin would be flooded with needless trouble reports because people didn't understand how turning off the all day HR affects many features of the watch.

  • instinct doesent have recovery time

  • it does not make activites innacurate at all. instinct dosent have recovery time.

only thing that would be wrong is body battery, the hr was not on anyways so there is no body battery.

calories calc would be correct if HR is on during activity

Casio GBD-H1000 have option. HR always on, only activity or always off, would be good if instinct have it too.

dont understand why they have auto or of. what is auto for?

  • calories calc would be correct if HR is on during activity

No, they would not, since they rely on the average Resting HR, which is acquired during the sleep, or during the periods of deep rest. And as well several other features need the Resting HR to work correctly.

dont understand why they have auto or of. what is auto for?

Because the gain in battery life is negligible, while the impact on other functions, and the potential increase of support requests (and hence the increase of cost) would not be worth of it.

  • BTW, I wonder why you need to turn the HRM off? Are you really permanently in such a situation that you cannot afford charging the device once or twice a week? That's all what I need to do, while using daily 2-4 hours of outdoor activity monitoring (using GPS). Turning the HRM off would perhaps help to get an hour or two more, but it is definitely not worth of the hassle of losing the majority of the smartwatch functionality.

If you really need to turn the HRM off permanently (except of activities), then set up a hot key for the HRM ON/OFF, and you can do it pretty comfortably.

Really? See what assumptions gets me. I guess I sound pretty foolish now. Never mind :)  My apologies 5785970.
