Data in Garmin not matching with data in other apps

Hi,

I've recently bought an Instinct and took it for a hike.

I also use Locus Map so after finishing I usually export the GPX files from the Connect app to Locus.

However there are some differences:

Garmin Connect / Locus imported

Distance: 15.58km / 17.76km

Elevation gain: 673m / 692m

Tracking time: 5:24:01 in both

Moving time: 4:00:45 / 4:48:33

The distance and moving time is quite considerable.

I checked with Locus Support add they say data shown in Locus is unfiltered and as such should be correct, and suggest that probably there is a kind of filter applied to Garmin, hence the shorter distance (15.58km is shown on the watch as well as in Connect).

Can you please advise on this? I was using the Hiking profile with default settings and no autopause. We stopped often to take photos, find a way through streams, etc...maybe that's the reason?

I had two other hikes where the values were about (but not entirely) the same. Also I went for jogging which was perfecly matching after being exported to Locus.

OK, I have looked at it - if you zoom close on the pace graph, you can see there are plenty of gaps, where the pace was slower than 1 hr per km. Even though you continued to move (just very slow), aparently…

This threshold may be hardcoded even if you have the autopause off, so most likely you can't switch it off. At least I…

OK, I have looked at it - if you zoom close on the pace graph, you can see there are plenty of gaps, where the pace was slower than 1 hr per km. Even though you continued to move (just very slow), aparently Garmin does not consider it worthy of the status "walk activity" and hence does not count it at all (neither the distance nor the time done with that slow pace). In contrary, Locus Maps does not care about the pace, and calculates the distance and the time as if it were all a regular walk.

It makes sense, that's actually what I was wondering about too.

However where this treshold can be switched off/on? Autopause is disabled.

Also I am wondering why the ascend is recalculated too?

I went for another hike, with less "slow wandering" so distance was more or less the same, but why would third party apps change the elevation data (usually showing more)? Lowest and highest points are matching though...

This threshold may be hardcoded even if you have the autopause off, so most likely you can't switch it off. At least I know of no way to do so. You can try using the Walk activity type instead of Hike, to see if it has the same threshold. Or you can try creating your own custom Hike activity, and check whether it makes any difference, but I suspect it won't change.

The original activity contains elevation data from the barometric altimeter. GPX track calculates the elevation from topographic data instead.

Thank you, so basically a GPX is just a bunch of waypoint and time data, rest is based on topography according to the app/system it is loaded into.

Hahaha thanks :) so if imported as GPX and not directly from the watch, the distance and other data are different Yet still not matching Lous Data...strange...

not quiet yet, but close

there was another strange calculation deviation with bike wattage and 20' Max

the user did not use every second recording and Garmin Connect calculated a wrong 20'Max
after changing his fit file to every second Garmin Connect did calculate the 20'Max correctly

seeing your GPX is also not every second, perhaps this could be the root cause for deviation ?

am not a crack in Garmin Connect workings either

Hi,

Actually there is a data recording setting under system settings, which I have been neglecting, thought it has nothing to do with how individual activity profiles are recording.

The two options are "intelligent" and "every second" recording, I've selected now "every second" and will see. It would make sense actually.
