Garmin Instinct not switching on

Hi, I have problem with switching on Garmin Instinct. After uploading track created in Garmin Connect and starting it the Instinct display became frozen, not possible to switch it off, so I tried restart by pressing CTRL. The Instinct switched off, but not possible to switch it on again, it just stops on the first screen with Garmin triangle. Not so nice behaviour of its last SW version during holidays in mountains - any idea how to put it in operation again? Thx, Jiri

  • I had a similar problem when using the feature to race an activity. The first time I tried, the watch froze for a minute and then reset. The second time, it happened again but couldn't get past the Garmin triangle logo no matter what I tried.

The only solution I found was to perform a master reset (see link below). Unfortunately, this erases user data. But it got the watch working again. Good luck.

  • I had a similar problem - course downloaded from Garmin Connect disabled Instinct boot. At last I got a new piece from authorised Garmin service center.

The master reset linked by Scott above I discovered just a few days ago, so I do not  know if this could help.

So let us to know if it works. BTW, there is a step "release the Start button". They mean "GPS" button, Instinct has no "Start" button.

The result after the second beep is very similar to the original state, you has to keep CTRL button for 10 sec to switch it off and then switch it on again...

I would like to know, if you have used some unusual characters in the name of that track you created in Garmin Connect. Because I did, and maybe this is the reason why Instinct had problem with it...

If you had saved backup files, the master reset would not be so painful.

    See support.garmin.com/.../

Courses and Activities can be copied as usual files, not over the NewFiles directory. Schedule.fit probably saves alarms.

Only Widget list and some settings from MENU-Settings-System is necessary to set again manually (Hot Keys for instance).

Hi, thank you and Scott for your kind advices, today I repeated the procesure and I was successful with "Secondary master reset".

I confirm that after reset it was necessary to set up the Instinct from the start status. Maybe one additional note - in my case it was necessary to remove the existing Instinct from Garmin Connect app befote pairing it again.

Concerning the question related to " Unusual characters" - as I am from Czech republic, we have some, and I used "é", "í" in routes names; but I did it several times with previous version of Instinct SW without any problem.

Because of Instinct SW issues I would recommend to everybody not to rely on Instinct trouble-free performance, but to have some backup solution ready, as for example another map and routing apps in mobile phone.

Wishing nice Christmas time and trouble free Instinct to all, Jiri

  • I have a similar problem. The Instinct won't switch on. I tried to master reset for several times but still doesn't work. I already contact to Garmin Product Support, and suggest me to reinstall the software. I did that but the watch still won't power on. Does anyone have the same problem? Please let me know how to fix this. Thank you.

  • I would continue your conversation with support. They will either provide additional guidance or possibly replace under warranty.

  • hi.. did you resolve this issue?

  • I never had this issue. Like I said earlier, contact Garmin support.

Hi, yes, see my above mssg 15 days ago - "Secondary master reset" was successful, and after it the set up of the Instinct from the start status. Rgds, Jiri

  • I never had the issue either, but you will lose nothing if you try the following tip coming from a forum of another Garmin watch (the MK1). Perhaps it works with Instinct too:

    - Watch not connected to the charger.

    - Press he following button combination for 15sec: Power (light), Down and Garmin (start/stop).

    - Plug into charger and shall come to live again.

With Instinct, it translates to the keys CTRL+ ABC + GPS, I believe

  • yes, I do. First, they did a hard reset on my watch and it turned back on. Next time, nothing worked, the screen was completely gone. I got the watch in October, so I could get it replaced. And now tonight it happened to me again. Battery died, put it on the charger, not turning back on. I am officially devastated. Tomorrow I was going to run based on map and then go swimming... :( Now, mild rescheduling can start, and need to reach back for my FR35 which knows quite a bit less.
