Instinct Shutting Off

Hi,

I'm not sure what is wrong, but my Instinct keeps shutting off randomly. My software version is 2.90 (c3964ca). Any help appreciated, don't want to master reset.

  • You will find previous software builds within the forum threads only. Any watch that develops a shutting off issue, the issue exists with no direct correlation to a software version. This forum thread started 3+ years ago. It can happen to any watch, any model, any series, any software version. There is no pattern. The issue being very rare should be known.

I have sent you a Private Message to address your software question.

  • Mine started doing this same thing about a month ago. Now it’s happened twice in 3 hours. $400 watch is now a POS

  • Mine started a couple of weeks back and iota only getting worse. This is no mere random event. For the price tag on this watch I expect a lifetime of more than just the warranty period. I would like to try to revert to the old FW/SW if possible. I don’t believe in coincidences theory

  • My solar surf started doing this when I tried to record some cardio exercise, it only turns back on when I plug it in. Yesterday it happened again, so did a software update and reset settings… woke the morning and the watch is off. I’m just out of warranty, not really feeling like buying a new garmin after that.

You are, of course, right that it should not happen, but taking the price of Instinct as argument is ridiculous, since it is a low-end model, and I do not think you find many cheaper comparable smartwatches on the market. Today, you can have a new Instinct for less than 130€, and when it was still a new model years ago, I had it for 199€, which is a bargain for the functionality it offers, on my mind. Many other smartwatches cost ten times of that.

Yes, of course, it is possible. If you ever downloaded any beta version, you can either install that beta version, or install the release fallback version from the installation zip. You'll just need to disable the auto-updates, to avoid it gets overwritten again. If you never downloaded such file, or did not keep it, choose the version you'd like to restore, and ask on the forum - there may by a kind forum user who'll be willing to send it to you, or just search the Instinct forum - in the past there were already similar demands with responses from people who archived the old versions.

  • Thanks for your input. Not sure how you got your pricing data, but my solar iinstinct cost me +$300. I think you are looking into the normal instinct... (checked Amazon, hitting currently $330.00)  The money might not be miuch for you,  but compared to cheaper off brand watches I expected a  better product support,. There might be better and higher priced watches out there but there is also a ton of cheaper watches I guess we can look at it from different directions.  IMHO Users shouldn't rely on having to  go on a forum fishing  mission in hopes of finding a kind user to apply what may be a potential fix.  Or at least something to try out before just, going with the recommendation of " throw it and buy anew one"  and rationalizing it with an  "after all its cheap for the functionality"  mindset. I guess each one is entitled to asses  their own  investment/benefit ratios, I for one prefer to place my money on a product that last longer than a mere couple of months out of the warranty period  and a company that will stand behind its product.

  • James K - That is how mine started also, after trying to record an activity.. At first I brushed it off as I didn't pay attention to my original battery charge when starting said activity, I assumed it was low and the reason it turned off. But then I started noticing that  it was turning off way sooner than it used to in the past in a consistent manner,  It would requires at times that I plug in to the charger cable to get it going again. Sometimes I was able to get it on by pressing the upper right button for 2 seconds or so,  for one or two times in a row before it got back on. I started paying close attention and I noticed the failure presents itself once I get to 19 days left of charge, as posted by a previous user. I found that to be an odd coincidence for a random event. Not saying it isn't but I would expect Garmin to provide us with some options before telling us to simply ditch it.

  • For anyone that comes across this thread, if your Instinct watch is powering off, please reach out to Outdoor Product Support. Your watch will need to be exchanged.
