Instinct crashing during activities

Has anyone with a Garmin Instinct running firmware 2.60 experienced the watch crashing/rebooting during activities? This is increasingly happening to me and has happened during Stairclimber (no GPS) and Hiking (GPS) activities. This is really annoying, especially on hikes, because I have to keep checking my watch just to make sure it hasn't reset and stopped tracking. I just did Angels Landing at Zion and had it reboot 3 times!

I tried connecting my watch to my Mac with Garmin Express just in case it might be have differently... 90% of the time, it shows the USB mode screen (the other 10% of the time, it reboots)... The computer never finds it as a USB mass storage device. Garmin Express never finds it either. When I unplug the USB cable, the watch reboots.
  • I just experienced this issue today during my strength training after trying to edit number of the repetitions during activity. The watch restarted first time and after that second and third time while I tried to start a crashed activity. Eventually I was able to start the crashed activity after fourth reboot and didn't see after that my training's exercises names and blindly finished my activity without the names of exercises.
That's really annoying and I am going to open a ticket but with the time of support response I see it's better to install beta because the response from beta team is much more quicker.

Look at your watch debug - err_log.txt. Do you see the same error?

  • mihailstacanov,

Editing the reps on a strength training workout also crashed the device for me once.

I can't even connect the watch to my computer to get logs or flash new firmware! When I connect it (to a Mac), the watch either reboots, or shows the USB screen without the computer actually detecting the device in mass storage mode.

Garmin, this is unacceptable! I went on a 0.6 mile hike and the watch rebooted 6 times! This is happening on hikes I might not ever do again!!
  • WildTuna,
unfortunately garmin doesn’t care what you write here and nobody from us can help you with reboots as to me also. I would suggest to open a ticket with garmin to get your watch to work (at least) and hopefully they fix some bugs while fixing your problem. I did that and wait for response

Do a device reset and see if the problem can be resolved.
  • @mihailstacanov that's too bad.

DavidSee I've done multiple soft and hard resets, and it's still the same.
  • 1. I contacted support and they suggested doing a master reset. I asked if these instructions were on the Internet, and they said they were not, so here they are, because they should be:

    Performing a master reset:
    • Start with device powered off
    • Press and continue hold Back/Lap
    • Press and release Power
    • Release Back/Lap button oncemessage appears
    • Select Yes
    Performing an unprompted master reset:
    • Ensure the watch is powered off
    • Press and hold the Down, Start, and Back buttons
    • Power the device on while holding these buttons
    • After the first beep release the Start button
    • After the second beep release the remaining buttons

    2. The master reset did not work. When I asked for a replacement under warranty, they said it would be easier to get a refund/exchange from the retailer!
  • It's easier and more convenient to do so as your contract is with the retailer. It's always my preferred option with any device that goes wrong.
  • ...When I asked for a replacement under warranty, they said it would be easier to get a refund/exchange from the retailer!...

I don’t think it will solve occasionally reboots because I believe it’s a software issue and meets at least my device too. Please let me know if exchange of watch changes the situation

I ran into this issue this morning -- if I try to do a strength training workout my watch constantly crashes. It certainly seems odd that without a firmware update that an issue like this would pop up for multiple people around the same time/date ...
