Instinct Solar Powers Off

My instinct solar constantly turns off, I've done the reset, I have more than 10 days of battery life left, it appears this is a common fault with the instinct solar, are Garmin going to actually fix the issue or are they just hoping that owners go away & purchase a different brand?

It was suggested I contact product support, their response was make sure it was fully updated & do a full reset. If the issue continued then take pictures of the front & back of the watch & provide proof of purchase.

Then before any replies, Garmin has locked the old thread so nobody could add any further comments.

SO, the watch updates were all done, I then did a full factory reset (including deleting all data), the watch still turns itself off, not as frequently but it still does it.

So now I've sent product support a copy of my proof of purchase, photos of the front & back of the watch, let's see what happens from here, but it appears that Garmin locking the previous thread, they don't wish people to see what's occurring with the solar instinct watches.

  • I'm having the same issues with my watch.  Waiting on product support to tell me what to do next as the software is up to date and the watch wont turn back on unless I plug it in to teh cable.

It's just over 18 months old but as this is a common issue it appears to be a manufacturing fault rather than a one-off which means the warranty should be handled differently.

  • Same problem as I am having

  • I have been having this problem too, watch is now shutting off randomly every couple of hours

  • As I mentioned earlier, they told me to make sure all the updates were current (which mine were) & to do a full reset (I did including deleting all data) which may fix it, I also turned off vibration, it was better, the watch would turn itself off every 18 hours or so, you can try that.

When I told Outdoor Support that, they asked me to send (as I said earlier), proof of purchase, photos of the front & back of the watch & email them (which I have done), I have also sent 2 follow up emails asking Outdoor Support what is happening next, but still no replies, I guess my next step is to take a day off work to ring them (they're only open when I am at work), but I've actually given up on them & have purchased another watch, I'll not recommend a Instinct Solar to anyone, my opinion is the watch isn't worth the expense considering you'll probably not get much more than 12 months out of it.

  • I've done all that, watch is virtually unusable now, I've only had the watch 16 months,  first started happening 5-6 weeks ago, never had a problem before, at first it was only during activities, now it happens during normal use.

Looks like i'm not the only one this is happening too so hoping it can be sorted outside of the 12 month warranty period

  • I have exactly same problem as everyone else. The issue is worse when I use it in sport mode - Strength Training or Treadmill for example. Sometimes it doesn't turn on at all, sometimes it does but Switches off again after few seconds or minutes.

Dear Garmin Support, what exactly is your company doing to resolve this issue? This is clearly not as uncommon as you stated in the previous thread that you locked.

Is there a software update coming that is going to resolve the issue? Are you thinking of recalling faulty watches and issuing replacements or refunds?

  • Hi same issue for me, for a few weeks (OS update?) my instinct solar has started to turn off while in activities. I contacted the support who gave me those instructions, unfortunately, it doesn't work. This morning I wasn't able to use my instinct for a running session, by 45 mn of running, the watch started to turn off again and again. I noticed it happened every time I started again my session from where it stopped.

So I did the whole procedure with the buttons, but I wasn't able to "reprogramming" my watch with Garming Express, my firmware was already on the lastest version.

I'll try to reach the support by phone this week to start a return procedure :-/

    Hello,

In order to reset your watch, please follow this procedure

Turn off the watch by holding the " Light " button (about 5 seconds).
Maintain the button " Top Right " + " Bottom Right " then turn on the watch with the same button " Light " (3 buttons at the same time).
release the " Light " button
At the first Beep/Vibration, release the " Top Right " button
At the second Beep/Vibration, release the " Bottom Right " button
Your watch asks you to choose the language (down arrow to choose and runner to validate), the Units (Kilometers) and the time format.

Then make a software reprogramming with the Garmin Express program that you can find at this address

    www.garmin.com/.../

Once these procedures are done, place the watch outside for 10 minutes at a fixed location and start an activity to get the satellite signal.

    Sincerely

    Garmin Support France

  • Update to my earlier response. I contacted Garmin Australia by phoning them. They acknowledged the issue & are simply replacing my watch with a new one. Watch is 19 months old.

    That's pretty good service.

  • I purchased an Instinct Solar almost two years ago.  It worked fine for about a year, but then every time I attempted to connect to GPS the watch would turn off.  The Control button had to be pressed multiple times to get the watch to turn on again.  Even it the watch was fully charged, i.e. showing "24d" by the battery icon, it would still turn off when GPS connected.  I tried resetting and then resetting to factory default a number of times with no improvement.  As if that weren't bad enough, the watch then began to turn off intermittently, even without attempting to connect GPS.  I eventually started testing it to see how long it would stay on and discovered that after approximately 23 to 24 hours, it would turn off.  I could easily turn it back on and it would stay on a few hours before shutting down again.  The watch is basically unwearable as it would have to be charged every 20 hours or so and none of the features used, just to be able to see the time.  After reading some of the forums re other Garmin devices with a similar issue, I tried resetting while it was plugged in to the charging cord.  This had no effect on performance.  Please assist.  Current App Version is 4.46.0.24 which shouldn't matter as it is now set to factory default and automatic updates.

  • Mine is doing the same. Tried hard reset and no joy there either. Hopefully Garmin can acknowledge there is a huge problem with this watch and provide everyone with the appropriate solution. They charge a small fortune for “quality” I’d like my moneys worth!!!
