new Garmin Instinct Solar

https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/679335

It's finally here!

My thoughts: For 100$ more you get almost twice the battery life because of solar assisted charging (smartwatch mode) or 8 hours more gps time. Also if you disable all smartwatch features it claims unlimited battery.  But more importantly you get the new elevate sensors which work underwater. It's a nice upgrade, but I already bought a used instinct for 155€ so I'll stick with it..

  • I think not. The "old" sleep metrics by Garmin are some InHouse Analysis. On the Fenix 6 they roll out the Beta-Firstbeat things.
Sleep metrics by firstbeat are around 6 month old. Xiaomi MiWatch Color are the first and only who have it.

  • Perhaps it was not the same thing that FirstBeat came up with recently, but it was always based on the HR Variability data analysis from Firstbeat anyway. Unfortunately, Firstbeat changed their website recently, and I am unable to find the original articles about sleep analysis and HRV, referring to Garmin too.

  • ... and anyway, unlike most other health-analysis functions in Garmin devices (Body Battery, VO₂Max,....), the sleep data analysis is actually not being done by the device, but on the servers of Garmin Connect. You can see it easily by checking the sleep data couple of times during the day - each time they differ, because the server continues to process them. Hence the device you use is actually irrelevant, and it does not matter much whether you have the new Instinct Solar or the old one. The only difference may be perhaps the presence of oximetry data with the new model, improving the analysis, and also the HRV data may be perhaps better with the newer hardware.

This is one of the changes Hexxer is referring to with the newer sleep metrics. It's done on the device now. Here's a good read if you haven't read it already.

  • We will find out soon enough but going by DC Rainmaker's article it doesn't appear the new Instinct Solar has the new sleep metrics--only the Fenix and later on, the 945. Anybody have info to the contrary?

  • You are right. But you overlook that the article was written before the Instict Solar was published.

  • DCRainmaker did say hopefully it would come to other devices and he didn't exclude the Instinct. I think Hexxer is correct that things could change now that Garmin acquired FirstBeat.

  • Good point! Let's hope that Garmin does upgrade the Instinct Solar. Mine is on order.

  • Unfortunaltely. I think we wont Disappointed

  • garmin instinct hydration widget does it have?
