new Garmin Instinct Solar

https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/679335

It's finally here!

My thoughts: For 100$ more you get almost twice the battery life because of solar assisted charging (smartwatch mode) or 8 hours more gps time. Also if you disable all smartwatch features it claims unlimited battery.  But more importantly you get the new elevate sensors which work underwater. It's a nice upgrade, but I already bought a used instinct for 155€ so I'll stick with it..

  • Also it is probably the only advantage casio gshock gbd-h1000 has over the instinct solar.. Along with the build quality

  • I wish they backported power saver modes to regular instinct.I use galileo a lot and on busy weeks I can totaly destroy battery within 3-4 days (long bike rides, long runs) - if I could tweak the settings it would be awesome. I'm considering switching to solar one, despite the high price - it looks like in terms of solar battery it's the most badass garmin watch Smiley

  • Well why don’t you get a Fenix? That has everything you want.

Because I already have the Instinct and am happy with it (for 200€ it was a good buy). But should I need to buy a new watch, I would not buy the practically identical device for double of the price I paid originally. I'd then indeed rather buy Fenix, or more likely the Descent.

  • When it drops (on sale) to the $250-$299 range I may bite. I had the Instinct for a week or two but then sent it back when I got a 5x on sale. I have always kind of missed it. The 5x is a fine watch but the sapphire glass makes it tough to read unless outside. The Instinct was very readable indoors. And now the Instinct has the Body Battery widget.

Mainly though, Im a solar geek - I love the idea of sun power. This new Instinct seems to utilize solar to make a true difference, rather than being more of a gimmick like the original 6s where little battery life was added.

    I can wait for a sale. :)

  • Please note the Instinct Solar has its own forum thread since there are hardware and software differences to the base Instinct released Fall of 2019.

    Instinct Solar

  • The old instinct and the new Instinct Solar models have a lot of unused display area, which reminds me of Fenix and Fenix 2. At the new solar variants, the not used display area is used sensibly for a bigger solar panel area, which you can see very well on this pic (pic from dc rainmaker)

And because the instinct solar has only a monochrome display (and no maps), this has a very large impact on battery life (if the sun is available). Casio has to be careful...

  • I just buy one. Which Sleep metrics are that? The old Garmin Crap or Firstbeat? Does anyone know that? Mine come on tuesday

  • The old Garmin Crap or Firstbeat? Does anyone know that?

Both of them, since Garmin always used the Firstbeat technology. BTW, Garmin recently acquired Firstbeat, hence Firstbeat now actually is Garmin.
