Read the back of the device. It says X + power on to reset it. Try that. It worked for me.
Conventional wisdom is to try a different USB cable if you have one. The most likely cause of failure to charge (or a lost data connection if connected to a PC) is a bad cable.
Reset is a big hammer. Would not go there unless changing the cable does not fix the problem.
If neither new cable nor reset helps, open a support ticket.
Took mine apart and discovered that the internal connection between battery and motherboard had disconnected. Pretty flaky design. Reconnected and it has been working for a year now. But I wouldn't trust it on a serious expedition.
This is not likely to be the answer to "won't charge". There are two types of USB cable - charge only and charge+data. The Garmin cable is always charge+data. The random USB cable you pull out of the junk drawer MIGHT be charge only. But no matter which kind of cable you have, it WILL charge. Charge only cables will NOT support connections for things like f/w updates.
That said, a BAD cable of either type is a possible cause of "won't charge".
Try taking the cover off the back and checking the battery connection. Mine would only work while plugged into computer or wall, and only ever showed 0% battery, powering down instantly when unplugged. Took the back cover off and battery connection was loose. Popped it back in firmly and back to normal.
Well, thats two of us who have needed this fix. I suspect the paid for garmin refurbishment just means they do the same fix and send it back with an invoice.
Garmin will never return YOUR unit to you. They will send you a refurbished unit which somebody else sent in for service. This gives you faster turnaround. Your unit will eventually be repaired. Then it will be sent to somebody else who sends a unit in for service.
