Tracking ends when powering device off?

Hi there,
I bought a DELORME inReach SE unit a while ago, activated it last week to play around a bit before my trip, being on Freedom Recreation Plan.
I have an issue with tracking. On Sunday I started tracking from my device and sent a "starting my trip" message to myself to check if the link worked.
Did a little ride and the unit grabbed and sent two points. The link I received via E-Mail worked and displayed these points on my mapshare page.

Yesterday I had a full work day so switched the unit off (powered it down) without stopping tracking.

I would have expected that tracking would continue after powering the unit back on today. Didn`t.

When I go to the units tracking page it offers me to start tracking, points sent: 0.

Is that the normal behaviour? If so it should be in the users guide all over the place.
E.g. here: https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch...Kf60kr4BnAWU4A

When I go on a 3 week travel abroad that means I need to have the unit switched on and charged for 3 weeks for a continuous track, right?

Thanks,
Andy
  • Yes, this is normal behavior. Technically, you do have a break in the track. That is, if you were to look in the exported .gpx file for the track, you would see multiple track segments. However, as long as you start tracking in the same location where stopped on the previous day, this will not generally be perceptible when viewed (for example) on the web site. This is no different than any other handheld GPS unit.

If you insist on a continuous track, you can either edit the .gpx file by hand (unpleasant and error-prone) or use any one of a number of mapping applications to join the segments. I don't know if Garmin's Basecamp is capable of this kind of operation or not.

    Thank you,
I am usually tracking with non-Garmin software (Oruxmaps, Pathaway) and get asked if I want to continue tracking when powering on the device or starting the app, which seems sensible to me.

Good to know how things are with the SE.

  • Andy, I have the Explorer+ rather than the SE+. If I shut the Explorer+ down, I get a prompt that I have 3 (or some number) of unsent points which will be lost, so do I still want to shut down. Since I often do fairly long hikes in the local hills in rugged terrain (hence a number of blocked points until I get into a clear area), I sometimes have a half dozen track and or logged points. If I am not in a rush, I will rest for a bit and eat a snack before getting in the car to drive home, then shut the Explorer down. The Explorer also has a sync function (don't know if the SE+ has that as well). Oh, I should mention that I use my Explorer+ with my Android cell phone and so use Earthmate linked via bluetooth with the phone - the phone allows synching via cell towers, So I can get all the points if I am in cell phone distance, though it costs extra from the cell phone company.
