Fenix 5x does not connect to windows 10

Hi all, I have been trying for months but I still not able to connect my garmin fenix 5x to a PC.

I followed many instructions, official and unofficial, I tried also on different PCs and with two cables, always the same result.

I tried also setting "Mass Storage" or "Garmin" on Fenix USB settings.

When I connect the Fenix 5X to ma PC the only thing that happens is that the start charging, nothing else (not even a beep on the PC), the computer does not see any device connected, the device manager does not refresh so there are no new elements.

I'm struggling for a year and I thought that was a fenix firmware problem and was hoping that will be solved with an update but the problem is still the same.

I don't know what to do next, anyone found a solution?

  • I am sorry if you continue to have an issue with your watch not going into Mass Storage mode when using a computer.

Bigger picture - there are millions of Fenix watches currently in use worldwide that have no issue with mass storage mode when plugged into a computer. (You can add to that the devices out of the 150+ products we produce that update using the computer.)

Please note, the steps I  gave above will resolve the issue 99% of of the time.

If you golf with your watch or need to add additional mapping from another region, please contact your nearest regional Garmin Outdoor Support to exchange your watch. As mentioned above, test more than one computer if you have the option. The issue can also be a Windows issue with properly loading the USB driver after it reads your watch connected via USB.

    Hi Chris.

    First thanks for your post.

I'm aware that there are millions of Fenix watches without that issue. And I'm pretty sure that Garmin is also aware that some of us are having the problem. Some post here and a lot will never post, just give up.

I've done all the steps several times. Every time an firmware update comes out I try again and again.

I've done it with the original cable and tried with cables that work on other friends watches. No luck.

It's also not a Windows problem because it does not work on Mac also.

The only thing I can do with the cable is charge the watch.

Now my watch is out of warranty because I bought it when it came out and the only thing I can do is to hope that Garmin assumes that there is a problem with some devices and calls for a free fix.

We are talking about an expensive product and we sure deserve a better solution than just buy a new model.

    Best regards,

    Nuno Maia

    1. Well, I had a similar problem for 3 days now. My Garmin fenix 5x, connected, heard the connection sound and then after fiew seconds heard the sound of disconection. It was charging Normaly but Garmin express didn't recognized it, and so Windows 10.

NOTHING helped. Unistalling, installing etc. The only thing that helped me, was to clean the contacts in watch and the cable, with alcohol. That solved the problem.

So, my advise, before do anyhing, CLEAN THE CONTACTS...
