Fenix 5, corrosion on charge port pins

Hi, I have a Fenix 5 (slate grey) from September 2018, so just around six months old.

It has become a bit fiddly with regards to getting a good connection on the port. Took a peek and it seemed like there was some dirt on the connector. Wiped it down, still there. So grabbed a macro camera and took a closer look.

Seems like my connector is quite corroded! Have any of you had the same issue? ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1465898.jpg ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1465899.jpg
  • Wow! My wife and I have had a 935 for nearly two years now and have no visible corrosion, despite a significant amount of indoor pool and open water sea swimming. That might be because we always rinse them in freshwater after use in the water, wear them in the shower after any activity, and dry them before connecting them to the charger.

I also have a 5+ since November that does not show any signs of corrosion.

If you can say you've done the same, then you should reach out to Garmin support.
  • This is almost certainly a result of connecting the cable with the connector not entirely clean and dry.

I've had it in the pool for swimming for 8-10 times, and I usually have it on in the shower - although I usually take it off and wipe it down with a towel afterwards.

Admittedly, I don't clean the contacts thoroughly before charging, but it has -never- been wet right before charging.

Overall the watch is in great shape, so this puzzles me quite a bit.

After finding out about the corrosion I went on Google to see if it's a typical problem on the F5. Seems that Garmin has changed the connectors to a different alloy (or plating) on the 5X due to similar problems.

However, if I'm the only one with this issue on a Fenix 5, that's a bit weird.
  • This winter I noticed the same on my F5. I have the watch about 1 year. After taking a shower after work outs in the gym, I wipe the contats extra with my towel. However I think they should be resistant for corrosion under al circumstances.
  • Yep, I have a corrosion on 1 contact out of 4 (second top). Mentioned it first time after open water swimming activity over all 4 pins, used tooth brush to clean and the other 3 looks fine now, except that one. Also tried using isopropyl alcohol but it is still there.
  • Need to clean mine weekly, it develops quicker and heavier if I use a small aftermarket rubber cap as protection in the port.
  • That looks very much more like some gunk rather than corrosion. Can you post up pictures after cleaning?
  • Mine connector is like new after 2 years of use. I wear it all the time, 10-15h sport/week and 2swims/week.
  • I have same problem with my Fenix 5, I need to clean with alcohol sometimes to avoid the corrosion.
  • No problem here, i have it for a year now, i average about 3-4 workouts a week, mostly running and biking.
After every workout i rinse the watch and just wipe it with a towel, i do not pay much attention to drying the charging port.
Never chareged it wet, i always charge it in the office, and the pins look like brand new.
