Fenix 5, corrosion on charge port pins

Hi, I have a Fenix 5 (slate grey) from September 2018, so just around six months old.

It has become a bit fiddly with regards to getting a good connection on the port. Took a peek and it seemed like there was some dirt on the connector. Wiped it down, still there. So grabbed a macro camera and took a closer look.

Seems like my connector is quite corroded! Have any of you had the same issue? ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1465898.jpg ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1465899.jpg

Same problem here. I bought it in august 2018, and I noticed the rust 2 weeks ago on the second pin, I cleaned it with isopropilic alcool and almost all rust is gone, but on that contact pin it can be noticed that it has some craters where was rust. Unfortunately I dont have Garmin customer suport in my country so I hope it wont get worse.

    P. S Garmin have a kind of disclaimer:

strange thing with this second connector, most of the people in this topic have problems with the same connector. here's how mine looks, after not full 4 month use, I'd say pretty big damage already. probably be trying to replace it.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1472764.jpg
  • I've got the same problem with a 2 month old fenix 5. Contacted Garmin support who sent me advice on how to clean the charging port. I've cleaned and dried mine after every run so not sure what more I can do to stop the corrosion.

Anyone had success in getting a replacement and if so have they changed the design on the one sent out?
  • Had the same issue, corrosion on the (mostly) the second pin. Bought my watch back in November last year and noticed it for the first time maybe two months ago. Ended up cleaning it, making sure it was clean and dry and it charged ok but then during the week it built up (usually have about a week use out of each charge) and had to be cleaned again before next charge. Cleaning it usually just took a damp towel in my case.

Contacted Garmin here in Sweden a few weeks ago, sent a couple of photos, and they replied that they wanted to replace the unit. Ended up being some errors with the spelling of my name but I sent the unit in this Sunday and got a brand new watch delivered today. And since they only wanted the watch unit I got an extra charging cable and arm strap for the trouble. Now I just hope that this one won't start to corrode, no idea if they changed anything. Looks the same.

Kudos to Garmin in Sweden though for replacing it without any questions and once the address issues was sorted did in in 4 days.

    Just an update;

I sent my F5 in to Garmin here in Denmark. They shipped a new watch back to me the same day they receive mine in the mail. So thumbs up for Garmin DK service from here.

Will be looking after this issue on the new watch also. As far as I could understand, no changes have been made to the connector on the F5, so the problem will most likely repeat itself.

As an update, Garmin UK have offered me a refurbished Fenix 5. Not willing to accept after having the watch only 2 months. Really concerned that this is an actual design fault although a friend of mine purchased his in September 2017 and his looks like brand new.

Bit reassured that some have received a brand new one though, there's hope for me yet!

Mine has almost completly disintegrated after last Ultra. After battery issues now this. I'll definitely return it.
  • Same problem here with less than one year of usage... It still charges, but the pin has almost disappeared :S

I've just sent an email to Garmin Support (Spain), will keep you updated about their answer.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1475499.jpg

    Damn, that's real bad!

Hope you get a new unit.
  • Esteve Thank you for reaching out to your local support team. I can't lie, I wish you were here in the US so I could bring your device to look at it.

When you interact with my peers in Spain, can you give them the following questions and answers?
    • How do you clean the device?
    • How often is it cleaned?
    • How long was it before the issue started?
    • What lotions or skin products do you?
    • Do you shower with the device?
    • Do you swim in the ocean? If so, how often?
    • Do you swim in a pool? If so, how often?
    • Does the device get hot while charging?

Plus if you have any extra information like if you started a new type of activity around that time or anything else that you could think of that could have changed when it started.

This information would allow us to find out why it is happening to some of you but not everyone.

So if anyone else would like to help out, feel free to reach out to your local Support Team too.
