We continue to investigate this issue, but do not have a solution. As a temporary workaround, the watch will update distance if you are able to sync with Garmin Connect Mobile, Garmin Express, or plug…
Everyone, we are sorry for the delay but I'm happy to report that in the current 14.73 beta software has a fix for the Zero Distance Issue.
Feel free to install the beta software and report in the…

I now have a 5x Plus so I no longer have this issue. However, syncing my 5x with Garmin Connect mobile did not work, nor did plugging it into a power source. The only workaround that did work was plugging it into a computer so that the device went into USB storage mode.
This seems to confirm previous reports we've had on this and other threads:
1. Fenix 5x Plus used to have this bug during beta phase, but it was fixed before release version. Somehow the fix isn't part of F5x release build.
2. Most if not all have been able to get F5x unstuck after plugin into a computer (thus activating USB storage mode). Few have been able to get unstuck by synging over WiFi. Unfortunately it's not viable to bring a computer into the wild.
Hoping this will be fixed soon as it has been resolved in F5x Plus already.
Sorry...in my earlier reply I failed to mention that plugging my Fenix 5x into my Android smart phone via an OTG adapter also worked.
For me, only bringing the watch into USB-Massstorage mode solves the issue. All other options have no effect!
On my watch all these options do not solve the issue. The watch has to be connected to an USB host and go into USB-Massstorage mode to solve the issue.
It's been now 4 months since I lost the navigation features on this watch.
Other than throwing it into the garbage bin, what options are there available? I am leaving on a hiking trip on a few weeks.
Is it possible to downgrade? While keeping the data?
@Garmin-Health Please keep me informed, the Austrian/German support did not respond yet to my request from two weeks ago.
Hello Garmin, these work-arounds do *not* work! Please provide a working solution for being far away from the next PC!
So I had to downgrade all the way to 11.0 in order to get this fixed. 12.0 was still showing 0. Obviously deleting all the data. While downgrading worked I am not sure what will happen if I try to upgrade it back someday.
I am actually very thankful with Garmin's frequency updates and length of support for already sold devices, as I have several other decade-old Garmin devices which are still getting updates. No other manufacturer I know does this for consumers. That said, I am just baffled this device, whose only distinguishing feature over 100-200$ cheaper devices (offered by Garmin itself) is navigation, has had navigation broken for soon to be close to half a year. And this is assuming the fix makes the next release cycle.
Because it's not only that "Navigation shows distance always 0". Whenever this bug happens, and it happens whenever it has been a couple of hours away from a computer, navigation just does not work. The watch will show a random fixed number as ETA, do not warn on upcoming turns, do not recompute the route if you go off route, etc.
