update failed try again

As of about 15 minutes ago, my fenix 5 has been showing "update failed, try again" If i click done, it shows the same message again 15 seconds later. The watch is now unusable. Tried rebooting, but the message came back immediately upon restart.

  • I had the same issue after doing a wifi update. But was able to fix it be connecting it to my computer and updating it via garmin connect.
  • I had the exact same problem. Strangely, the previous night, my watch said it had updated successfully. However Vel11226’s solution to update via computer seems to have fixed it.

    Same problem here but without a computer available. Right after dismissing the message I held the menu button and disabled auto-updates which stops the error. Oddly a few minutes later a message showed successfully updated, and I've now re-enabled auto updates and all is well.
  • The 12.30 is also failing to install on my 5S. I've seen the "updated to 12.30" text multiple times, but it still runs 12.00. Also got the "update failed" message a few times last night.

    I’m having the same issue. My fenix 5s Sapphire has been pants lately. Considering going back to a Fitbit.

    Hello all... same here with Fenix 5 sapphire edition. Since the update become available it fails as stated repeteadly mentioned in this thread. I've tried update via Express and it seemed to make it but now it (the watch in the item of the Setup menu, "about") indicated that the 12.30 e891a64 is alredy in place (meaning installed), but the watch still ask for an update (yes seems to be the very same needed to be applied again)... this is Setup menu, System, Software update where i've unchecked auto-update due constants popups of "update failed try again", it also shows an item stating "update available"

    Note that the name of some, or all, of the items may differ from their names in english because I have them in spanish.

    So... I am sure someone made a mistake. Please consider a new release to patch this behaviour.

    Experiencing the same problem, although connecting it to my computer hasn’t solved it

    anither strange thing I have noticed in the last couple of days is that my onscreen notifications, such as “move” and “move bar cleared” stay on the screen, rather than appearing and disappearing after say 30 seconds.

    I did the same, and I've seen "successfully updated" message, but looks like the watch is still running on 12.00 (86a921d). Did u try to check firmware version at "System" - "About" menu?

    Same with my Fenix 5S since 31.1.19. FW is 12.30, Garmin Express find no waiting updates. To avoid the permanent "Update failed, Try again" messages, I disabled the automatic updates. But the watch frequently is showing "Update available. Will take about 1 Minute" and if confirmed, the "update failed, try again" pops up again. The text may be other in english, I've translated from my watch, which is in German.
    I'm a bit irritated, that this thread is running for more than a week, affecting obviously customers around the world, but there is no sight from Garmin about background information, actions taken or a possible work around.
