Steps during walking activity not showing up in Connect

The last two walking activities i have done, the steps did not show up in Connect IQ. In one case it displayed Steps IQ and "0". and in the other case in the place where Steps usually show up (under calories in the "stats" display) it is blank, does not say "Steps IQ" even. In all previous walks, the step count does display there, labeled as "Steps IQ". Any thoughts on what i can do about this? Do others always see steps for walking? Thanks.
  • I believe Steps IQ comes from a Connect IQ data field. Did you remove/uninstall/change any custom data fields?
  • Thanks! Yes, then that is probably what happened. I didn't specifically know that field had that effect, but it probably explains it. But then my question is, doesn't walking give you the steps automatically by default, somewhere, or is that custom data field needed in order to see steps during the walking activity? If i go to "step details" there is a timeline, but you cannot necessarily exactly map it to the actual steps during the activity. Anything better than that? Or, do i have to find that custom field again? (I'm not even sure which one it was, my watch is still pretty new and i'm experimenting with it).

Do you talk about a problem, steps for current activity are not shown on watch - or do you mean steps for activity after sync with Garmin Connect?

In case of GC, I have the same problem. Steps for activities IMHO are cumulated into summary 24h steps - but unfortunately I cant find any steps in GC Android App - neither for current, nor for older activities in calendar. Do you know, where i can find them?

EDIT: But Steps for single activity must be stored somewhere:
    - I just made a short walk with InWalk (only 721 steps) - and synced to Android GC
    - Activity "InWalk" is shown as separate colored sign --> but I can't see these steps inside the activity --> but the total 24h steps have increased 721 Steps
    - I synced my daily activities with another Android App "Yazio" --> There now I have 2 data fields: a) activity "InWalk" with 721 steps and b) total daily steps, but WITHOUT these 721 steps

Can someone explain, how to find the 721 steps for activity in GC Android? Or how to add?
  • I'm not exactly sure what is in the activity fit file by default but this is how I solved this.

At first, I added an IQ "Simple steps" field to my activity screen. With that field I was able to see the steps during the activity. The problem was that when I would end the activity, the save activity display would replace the data fields so I had no way to see the steps info again. Therefore, I needed to make sure I noted the steps prior to stopping my activity. The IQ "Dozen Run fields also includes a steps data field.

Then I installed the IQ Data Field "Steps to Fit" and replaced "Simple Steps" on my activity display. With Steps to Fit, the number of steps for the activity appears in Connect in the lower left side of the Activity detail display.

    Thanks pshare .
    I thought, it's easier (I'm still a newbie) but I'll try.

EDIT: I have to create a personal activity, right?
Up to now, I used activity "InWalk" from store (fot walks without GPS), but I don't know, if it's possible to add additioal fields.
  • Great responses, thanks! I just added "steps to fit" so i hope it will work; won't know for sure until i do the activity next. But, i did have the "dozen run" field there before, was trying it out but decided i didn't need it so i removed it, and so that must explain why steps went away from Connect.

Garmin - it seems to me this should be standard that Steps for an activity like walking are recorded in Connect, without downloading a custom IQ field.!

I also did it - and pshare - yes it was easy :D - and it works. Thanks again for this great advice! :)
And yes TomCon3 - I'm also surprised, that this isn't a standard feature!
Steps of activities are cumulated into 24hSteps - Thats OK. But nevertheless IMHO they must be shown additionally within activies in GC (of cause without be be counted twice...)

So, I only still have 1 more problem:
24hSteps (including ActivitySteps are used to calculate 24hDistance - and in case of set a personal step length in GC, it's: [24hSteps*PersonalLength). That's OK.
But in activities, the steps are at NOT multiplied with PersonalLengt - but with another automativally calculated StepLength.
Sometimes this is OK - but for measuring distances by walking, that's absolutely NOK.
Is there probably another IQ-Datafield, that is calculating what I need???
