How to add summits on Fenix 5x map

Hi,
I’d like to add summits location (triangle symbol), name and elevation in the F5x map, so that I can know all the summits by projecting with F5x whike hiking.
Anybody would have a clue on how to do so ?

thanks
  • Depends where you are. Some third party maps include summits.

No, learning HOW to add summits to a map does NOT depend on where you are. That is a skillset that is independent of your map provider. Valentin is not asking for ready made maps with summits.

Valentin, take a look at Talkytoaster.me.uk. Martin Overton appears to have a good knowledge on how to add extra data to the standard OSM maps, he might be able to help you or even have a ready map with summits.
  • Yet you've just suggested a ready made map ;)

So yes, it does depend on where you are unless you want to get into the art of map making :)
  • Ok, I made some searches on internet prior to this post, and I felt that there was no turnkey solution, but I wanted your views prior to deep dive into OSM.
I’ll let you know. FYI, I will search how to add summits for Alps and Corsica regions.
  • Fire up basecamp and add some waypoints
  • "Sendpoints" in the IQ store is also an option.....
  • Thanks, good suggestions (waypoints, senpoint) when you want to add a couple of summits, but not the solution to add several hundreds main summits present in my targeted area.
  • I'm sure Alps region summits are well mapped on OpenStreetMap and Garmin.opentopomap.org is a good source to download OSM maps with topographic properties and contour lines. I'm sure summits are present in them.
  • Hi Sis651,
you’re right that the maps provided by opentopomap include summits. The problem is that they are displayed on F5X with a small icon (peak) without any name.
So far, I managed to extract all summits from OSM to a .osm file with osmosis, but now I have to convert the .osm file to .img file.
Even doing that, I’m quite sure the names will not appear on F5X.
Anybody knows if a setting in F5X would do the job ?
  • There maybe is another solution that will do your job.
    Its to use Saved locations.
Saved locations can have many different symbols and their names display on map. You can also alter between navigating a course and going for a saved location and when viewing the list you see how far it is.

If you could convert your file with summits to a location fit file and put it in the newfiles folder then you get the above. Ive no idea how many saved locations 5x can handle.

I tested it through creating a gpx waypoint file at gpsies.com. put that in new files folder.
All waypoints adds to saved location in the location fit file on watch.
Unfortunately symbol type do not import.
I then opened the location fit file in FitFileRepairTool and updated the symbol types and imported it again. Then I have the correct symbol on the map with a name and the possibility under saved locations to see how far it is and start to navigate to it.
