UltraTrac issue

Hello Everyone,
I start using my Fenix 5x in Ultratrac mode since a few Months.
Recently, I participated to 90km race and discovered that the registered km were totally wrong. End recorded distance was 120km. Quite a hudge difference which I don’t understand.
Could anyone explain what goes wrong and how to solve it?

PS: it was even worse when connecting with Stava as the distance that appeared in Strava was 160km...
I really don’t understand...

tx for your help.

  • How does the track look like? I used ultra trac for hiking ones and the track was full of small turns out of way and back (don't know the right English word for that ) which caused the track was much longer than in reality

indeed track is full of incoherencies... look at this ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1372800.png
  • This is even another issue I have also noticed. When you stop somewhere the watch still counts the distance, I do not understand why. It is better to stop the watch, issue I have I am forgetting to start them again. Test it - the watch wil easily add 2 km to your hike when you keep them running while sitting on lunch. My friend has the same with Fenix 3.
  • Most gps do. It's due to jitter. When stopped for a while it's always best to stop recording.

Tx but Use my Garmin in races. If you stop the watch you have no more view on what your time is... don’t undertsnad why there is such a big bug in a watch that is designed for ultratrails...
  • One solution to keep distance and pace reasonable when using UltraTrac is to get a foot pod and set it to Speed/Pace>Always and Distance>Always. That way you will still get the live info on where you are and approximate GPS track recorded, without the inconsistencies of UltraTrac messing up the distance accrual (if you stand still with a foot pod, it won’t add distance).

Tx. Meaning I have to buy an extra device where rhe problem is at Garmin and still unacceptable...

My response was to Doktorko not yours. I understand you can't stop it during a race but provided you're moving there should be minimal jitter.
  • Another option that I use is adding Elapsed Time as a data field. I have a Data Screen using two fields. Top is Timer and bottom is Elapsed Time. While paused, the Elapsed Time field continues to accumulate but the activity will stop recording data points so most of the jitter is eliminated. Handy when 'racing' or any time that you are interested in total activity time (active plus paused). Of course, that info is also available on Connect post activity processing.

As you will know, UltraTrac mode only turns the GPS on periodically to save battery. Therefore, if you use UltraTrac you are accepting the compromise of less GPS accuracy in return for battery life; so you should not be surprised when distance and pace are not as good as when using normal GPS mode and it’s not Garmin’s error (they are offering you the choice to make that compromise). What I am proposing is something that will allow you to have your cake and eat it; but yes you will have to spend a little more money to achieve that.
