Since 9.20 update battery drain in 3 days in stead of 7 ;(

Please help. My watch is draining battery life , I think from the last update.

  • I have the same battery drainage as long as I use a 3rd party watchface.
As it worked without that problem before the update it should be able to get fixed.
Garmin please get it fixed soon because I really like my watchface
  • Gentlemen, next 3 betas (9.53, 9.71 and 9.72) not fix battery question.

However, if you do not like to keep fw 8.0 (better – don’t, because step by step options for fw 8.0 become unavailable in connect iq), and do like to use your favorite watch face, try one of the following steps (it will not return same battery life as it was with fw 8.0, but story will become much better):
For all cases below, first of all, charge device to 100% (keep it more 30 min charging after 100% for shure). After try steps below, until will get best result.
    • Wait until few full circles of device discharge completely and charge to 100%
    • Make soft reset – press and hold “Light” button until device will switch off completely. After few minutes, switch on it again and check the result.
    • Make “hard reset”, go to device settings and choose “Factory recovery”.
    • At beta fw 7.1 (latest now 7.2) declared possibility of battery drain fix for Fenix 5x. Can download last beta and install it to try as final call.
One of those steps will help to recovery battery life for satisfactory time.
  • When I'm using preinstalled Garmin watchface in 9.20sw, my battery drain without activities is about 0.3%/hr which alignes with the promised up to 12 days battery life. When using 3rd party watchface like "Time flies" or even Garmin own CIQ watchface, battery drain doubles.
  • Hello,

I have also recognized that the type of watchface used has a big impact on battery life.
I am now using one of the default/built-in Fenix 5X watchfaces, the analog one, with the two red indicators (not round) on the left and right side.
Having Pulse Heartrate Sensor activated but Bluetooth Connection disabled I get ~0,241% battery drain per hour, which equals ~17 days battery runtime.
I am now running the same test with Bluetooth enabled to get smart notifications.

PS: I am currently running Firmware v9.71
  • It sounds like the ciq watch faces are the biggest issue. Have you reported this issue to both the Garmin beta email address and the developer of the watchface?
  • WF developers cannot do nothing, because since fw 9.2, there was no any changes in SDK, which can produce battery drain, same, no solutions given to fix drain for latest SIQ.
SIQ developers, seems like not going to do nothing, because, from their side, all working good. Means native (integrated into fw) watch faces, widgets, etc.
    So, we have dead-end here…

However, you can try steps posted above. It will not return battery to same working time as it was with fw 8.0. But, if you had, let’s say, 10 days of battery life, you will have 7-8 days. Much better, than 2-3 days.
  • Potentially the watch face developers could also help report via the CIQ developers forum. I'm not expecting them to fix, just to help report. For what it is worth, my f5x battery use is not really different at all, but i do not have any CIQ watch faces i'm using. I'm still charging it basically every Saturday night after my long run, and still get a weeks worth of GPS workouts without issue.

I really hope this is not what is going on…. It would be a great error by Garmin not consider the third part application failures .
What do you think about a smartphone if after FW update it does not run correctly the third part applications?!? the most common and appreciated by customers?!?
I trust on Garmin commitment about solving this issue, but actually I was very frustrated when 9,72 beta FW was announced wth no mention about battery drain…. Almost all people are claiming about battery drain and the 9,72 deals just with other bugs?!?

Garmin, please fix it and make the fenix great again

  • I think will be the following story – as I sed before, after not difficult manipulation you can recover battery life to almost normal, in same time, to use latest firmware and your favorite watch face. Of course, battery life will be less, but not critical, as immediately after update to 9.2. So, people just will be accustomed to new situation and that’s all.
I do not know how many reports were done from different sides and users and developers. What the result? Appeared beta 9.53 – nothing. Next beta 9.71 – with remark, that they had fixed bug which may (!!! may, not will) cause battery drain at 5x after beta 9.53 (!!!!!) not a word about 9.2 official. Next beta 9.72 – nothing at all.
As I know, some users write to support center, and support center requests to send device to them. Means, that official position of Garmin – firmware 9.2 is working properly. Nothing happens with battery. Of course, why should they test firmware with watch faces developed by someone else (looks at list logically). As I sed before – dead-end.
So, all what we can do: or refuse from usage of custom watch faces, or make manipulations posted above, to make battery life acceptable. And become accustomed to new situation.

P.S. With last beta 9.72, my 5x become pretty faster, even visual. Who knows, what will be with next official fw. Hope it will be at the end of July, begin of august. As I know Garmin promised new SDK 3 for this period. Since 9.71 beta, 5x received SIQ 3.0.
Let’s wait a bit and see.
  • New beta 10.51 now available for Fenix 5x.
I do not know yet, regarding battery life but custom watch face working much faster. Switch from wf to menu and back coming with same speed as from native watch face.
    Finally, good update))
