Fenix 5X - 9.71 Beta Release

Hello Fenix 5X users,

We have new beta software ready for your upcoming adventures!

Fenix 5X: https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=11665

Note: Please allow for the updates to propagate across all servers. There is no need to post that the link does not work. It will after a bit of patience.

9.71 Change Log Notes: Please send all bug reports to "][email protected], and indicate which model of the fenix 5 series you have in the subject line.
• Added support for Connect IQ SDK v3.0.
• Improved a case in v9.53 that could have caused battery drain for the Fenix 5X

Please note, the beta updates released on these forums are not suitable for APAC region devices.
• After you install 9.71, check again and you should get a GPS update. It might be on the watch (check under Software Updates in System) or copy it from the .zip)
• No battery issues here, 24 hrs of usage since update and charge, 2hr 30min MTB session with GPS+Galileo and per second data recording, plus HRM and Cadence sensors via ANT+, BT on, connected to phone plus notifications of which I've had lots today and still at 84% battery.

Standard watchface used as all lag eliminated this way.

What about the altimeter? Are the ascent/descent correct?

It didn't appear under any of the activities options, until I did this. Thanks man!

Now the question is.. which is better? GLONAS or GALILEO? Many say that the more "mature" system beats the newer ones. GPS vs GALILEO.

EDIT: It's only been a couple hours, but I can immediately see the improvement in battery life compared to 9.20. Huge.

At me at GPS+Galileo tracks more plausible

After updatig to 9.71, my Fenix 5x is now no longer recognized by Garmin Express 6.5.0 or the recently released 6.6.0

When I connect the charging cable I can see that the battery goes under charging but the device is no longer recognized by both Windows and GE even by trying to scan for a new device.
My Fenix is configured as USB mass device.

Before 9.71 update everything was fine.

• Updated to 9.71....things noticed so far....
Watch runs faster for IQ apps....not as quick as v6.0 and before....but quicker than any version after...(not talking watchfaces)...taxing prg's like.....
Brickout on hard, Tetris on insane, pyrimid solitaire etc.... are now much less laggy,compared to after v6.0, where as on version v6.0 and before there was no lag.
No lag now on widgets....less than a second to get to apps.
Nice to see some speed back on the device,and I for one am very happy with this beta......and am enjoying my 5x very much.

:::::::::::::::
Watchface IQ......
I haven't tested IQ watchface prg's as I don't use any....so no speed info sorry.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Some bugs still present, noticed.....
Alt problems....not updating quick enough....
Intensity mins still problematic...( I either get them for free...or it works) same with all four 5x's I've tested,on any software version.
Apps (not favorites) and widgets will revert to a previous or random configuration.( reorder themselves ).....if updating software, or try to reorder them in GCM......but will remain in my chosen order when done from the 5x.
Map update to big to upload to my 5x.( although I use my own maps anyway)

All reported etc...

Cool.....I'll try Galileo next :--)
• +1 on the much improved battery drain
• Just tested IQ PRG speed allowance , with a benchmark prg in connect called Wolf benchmark.....
results:::::::
5x v6.0 score 161
5x v7.0 score 98
5x v 9.71 beta score 131
So we have quite a bit of speed back for the IQ environment. :--)
Forgot to say that I reported this aswell to the beta team.
• Watchface results::::::
I used Gearmin.....which is a very popular one...with a tonne of information displayed at any one time.

slightly under 3 seconds to change to apps....half second to go back.
2 seconds to change to a widget...half a second to change back.
::::::::::::::::::::::::
Digiface....

between 4-5 seconds to change to apps......almost 2 seconds to go back.

3 seconds to change to widgets.....1 and a half seconds to go back.
• Battery drain......
53% 11:30pm last night.
49% 12:08pm today.
full fitness tracking.....installing prg's....with no GPS usage.

Hallo,
that's my first message in this Forum..wow.
I had the same bad battery drain
With original firmware (8.xx) about 13%/24hours
After upgrade to 9.20 about 26%/24 hours. I was very disappointed and so decided to try the beta
I have installed the 9.71 beta and now it is about 18%/24 hours… I did all the test without gps.
So it was significatly improved but still not enough in my opinion.

The lag between wf and widgets is still no good, but for me it is not so important as battery life
about 0,5 s with 8.xx
about 2,0 s with 9.20
about 2.0 s with 9.71
