Running turn by turn directions/navigation

Just upgraded from fenix 3 to 5x recently and managed to take it out for my first run. I plotted a route in strava and imported it to the watch using the dwmap app. Went into Run, Nagiation, Courses, selected my course, Do Course... only to find I didn’t get any turn by turn directions, just on or off course messages... I’m a bit miffed. Given the fenix 3 gave directions why doesn’t the 5x?!?

Have I missed something in the settings? I added the talkytoaster 50k paid for maps that are routable for the UK and noted all other maps are turned on except the cycle map. Does this matter given I’m running? Or is it something else entirely?

i travel a lot for Work and had planned on using the 5x both in other towns/cities around the UK as well as other countries globally... it’s not looking promising though! All advice greatly appreciated...

Make sure the activity settings for your chosen activity (Run/Walk) specifies 'Use Map' rather than 'Follow Course'. Only 'Use Map' will route you using the watch routing feature - and display turn by turn navigation including distance to next turn.

you do need a routable map for this to work.

use map will reroute it using embedded map to the next point. If you leave the route, it will reroute you, using the maps. Follow course will route you, according to turn by turn notification defined in the course. However, this functionality is broken now.

No, you don't. the OP had this working on Fenix 3, that doesn't have maps. I had this working on F5 and previosly on F5X until it was broken by garmin. Actually, if you upload the route as .fit file, you can still use the feature. please refer to the other thread I mentioned.

  • No, you don't.

I think mbh refer to 'use map' feature when he state that you need a routable map.

I did and agree with both. Had TBT working on my age I’d 3 HR with no maps.
  • Not sure if this is the same problem, but II just verified today, that there are no turn by turn directions on my Fenix 6s, when using a round trip route created on the watch, There is only the tiny map which makes it almost useless when running in dark conditions. I think Garmin should fix that in a firmware update as soon as possible, as this is really a big let down on such an expensive watch.

  • Just uploaded a gpx file to my Fenix 6s, and there is no turn by turn direction at all. The exact same gpx file worked fine on my Forerunner 735 XT with turn by turn directions.

  • Found this from "HarryOnline" - and it works fine.

In the activity settings (e.g. Run Settings), there is an option Routing - Courses. Selecting 'Follow Course' is the default option, but you can change it to 'Use Map', then you will get turn by turn navigation. If the course is from a track, you will see a lot of blue dots for all the waypoints, which is disturbing. If the course is from a route, it will have fewer waypoints, but there is a risk that the route will be changed if it was generated using a different map.

  • I tried that last night, but my Garmin kept trying to force me to take the shortest road route back to the start/finish rather than directing me along my course.   Any idea what I did wrong?
