Running turn by turn directions/navigation

Just upgraded from fenix 3 to 5x recently and managed to take it out for my first run. I plotted a route in strava and imported it to the watch using the dwmap app. Went into Run, Nagiation, Courses, selected my course, Do Course... only to find I didn’t get any turn by turn directions, just on or off course messages... I’m a bit miffed. Given the fenix 3 gave directions why doesn’t the 5x?!?

Have I missed something in the settings? I added the talkytoaster 50k paid for maps that are routable for the UK and noted all other maps are turned on except the cycle map. Does this matter given I’m running? Or is it something else entirely?

i travel a lot for Work and had planned on using the 5x both in other towns/cities around the UK as well as other countries globally... it’s not looking promising though! All advice greatly appreciated...
  • My experience is that a course file that produces turn by turn directions on the fenix 3 also does so on the fenix 5x. Getting a file that includes the turn by turn directions is a bit of black art but it hasn't changed.
  • Try importing the route through Courses in Garmin Connect or Garmin Connect Mobile.

Mcalista, I’ll try that later. Sounds stupid but I didn’t think to try that as I’ve never had any issue with routes/courses created in strava on any previous Garmin devices (fenix or edge...). Not a fan of Garmin Connect for creating courses but if it works I’ll have to get used to it.

subtleguru, do you have more information on how you create your files in that case? Nothing changed in the way I’ve produced my routes between the watches, and I can see from searching that I’m not the only one with this issue but I’ve not seen a foolproof answer. In one Garmin suggested you had to buy the 1:25k mapping. I’ve got suitable maps so that shouldn’t be an issue.
  • My process is gpsies -> export as tcx (with turn by turn) -> mcbadger tool -> fit file -> copy to newfiles on watch

I am sure there are multiple paths to the same end but this is what I do.

That’s interesting. So it should be a fit file rather than just gpx? That would explain why none of the other methods I’ve tried would work.

never heard of the mcbadger tool before so will take a look.

  • I've not used dwMap, but routeCourse from dynamic watch and it can't transfer tbt.

If you would like to be in control of where you have your tbt turn-by-turn notifications, then use the fit file format as stated above.

If you can live with what Garmin think is the best places for tbt, then import your gpx in Garmin Connect and send it to watch from there.

One easy way to do the GC thing is to download the gpx in your mobile, click the file and the GC app is started with the file already imported. Just send it to watch from app and you get Garmin tbt auto generated.
  • Try importing the route through Courses in Garmin Connect or Garmin Connect Mobile.

This works for me, but you need to build the course and build it by clicking on each intersection where you need a turn prompt (does not tell me to go straight.). Works really well for me. Additionally, I keep the map on my screen when I know I have several upcoming turns and to keep a glance on the route compared to where I’m located—especially helpful if the intersections are more than a simple 4-way or “T” type intersection.

Ok so now I’ve got TBT working and tested in an area I don’t know at all as I was away from home. The only thing I noticed was the turn notifications came up without much notice, ie on my edge I think they come up with about 30 seconds notice, but here they seem to be much closer to the turning itself. I had to cross a couple of biggish roads and the notice would have helped with the flow in the cold. Is there anyway to get it to deliver the TBT notifications earlier?

Btw, on a side note I tried the mcbadger tool but couldn’t get it to start on my laptop... will take another look when I have more time.

I'm a bit lost too with these alerts: I did a setup of a course on Garmin Connect "Courses". Very simple: I selected a start point and the stop point, and accepted the proposed path.
Unfortunately, my watch showed me the course but never rang (only when i went off-course).
Are you saying that if you don't draw many points yourself, you will not get turn by turn alerts?
