Stairs counter not working since firmware upgraded to 8.0

Hi

I am a recent user of a Fenix 5X. I got it 6 weeks ago, and since then I've got 1 map upgrade and 3 firmware upgrades 7.40?, 7.60 a 8.00. Since this last upgrade it doesn't detect the stairs/floors climbed.

It's a bit like issue in Daily Stair Count Problem in v8.0 When Using Elevators but I don't get corrected taking the lift...

Any advice?

Best regards

Eduardo

    Hi everyone,

We are aware of an issue where the Floors Climbed feature is deactivated during the following activity types. For floors climbed to resume counting, the watch will need a reboot after recording one of these activities. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we should have a beta update available this week that will resolve this issue. (This list may include activities that are not preinstalled on the Fenix 5 series.)

    CYCLING (Indoor and Outdoor)
    FITNESS_EQUIPMENT
    SWIMMING
    ROWING
    MULTISPORT
    PADDLING
    BOATING
    STAND_UP_PADDLEBOARDING
    JUMPMASTER

    Thanks,

My brand new Fenix 5X counts way, way too many stairs climbed. It shipped with 7.60, and I didn't use it until after upgrading to 8.00, and then I did a reset to factory defaults after upgrading to 8.00 before actually starting to use it.

Today I've walked about 4-5 flights of stairs, and it says I've climbed 33 .... I did go Cross-Country Skiing in an area with a lot of up/down elevation for an hour though... But I would hope that the stair climbing counter is disabled when I start such activities? Otherwise it's gonna be way, way off for many activities where there is constant elevation changes.

I've actually worn the Fenix 5X with an Apple Watch Series 3 for a week, and compared the stats they gather. The step counter seems more or less the same on both devices, but the Apple Watch usually counts less than half of the stairs climbed versus the Fenix 5X, and the Apple Watch is far more correct in this regard. Kinda disappointed by this.

Todays flights of stairs - Garmin Fenix 5X vs Apple Watch Series 3:

    Fenix: 33
    Apple Watch: 5

The AW is dead-on correct, and both watches has been on my hand all day, both before, during, and after activities.

Until this is fixed by Garmin, the flights of stairs climbed metric is COMPLETELY useless.
  • Ignoring the question of accuracy, stairs climbed ARE calculated including elevation from an activity. I suppose you can argue either way on whether this makes sense - for me, If I get my stair goal met through trail running or climbing stairs, I'm happy. Got 84 floors yesterday during a trail snowshoe run and really don't care if a few of these are from going up and down the stairs at home. I can see how you might want them separate but, personally, I'm OK with this method.

I want actual stairs climbed to be listed as stairs climbed in the stats. Any general activity that involves elevation changes are not stairs. That should be logged as a general activity.
  • borgein, That's the difficulty with something like this - you want it one way and I prefer it another.

Hi Mel, it's not a big deal that something is taking longer than you thought. It is frustrating when you set expectations and don't take the opportunity to manage those expectations - even not so good news communicated is better than no communications. Please post an update on progress or your new estimate of when the beta update will be available. Thanks in anticipation of an update.

It has been more than a week for the update, more likely patch, you guys have no dignity left.
  • I wouldn't say dignity - bugs sometimes take longer to fix, release dates slip - I think the problem is more a lack of communication. There hasn't been an upcoming release thread since the 8 release so we can't see what is being worked on, in absence of that a little note to say its taking longer that we expect, would go a long way here.
  • Rebooting the watch after an activity works. However, this doesn't mean we have to restart our watches after every activity just because Garmin told that in its forums. Garmin is still responsible to release an update for this bug. Because that's a function not working. I didn't buy the watch knowing and willing to restart it after each activity.

For the altimeter part it works fine enough for me. It has two modes, barometer and altimeter. And as I know, it decides between each other depending on the motion detection. If you're moving it uses altimeter mode, but when stopped it should use barometer mode. Sometimes it works fine. I ride bike for about 60 KM and when I reach the destination altimeter is just one meter off. But sometimes it flies me above the roof when I'm in bad. Apparently GPS may be effecting the altimeter calculation too.

I don't know how far you have come with a fix for this, but for me, the floor climb is acceptably accurate until the MoveIQ registers cycling. Then is totally off.
