F5x Cracks on HR sensor resin due to curing fault

Hi
an heads up following several reports, substantiated by pictures, of f5x owners having cracked (christallized shall i say) HR sensors, which apparently is due to manufacturers curing defects that cause the transparent resin to disintegrate with heat excursion.
I had my f5x replaced no question asked by Cotswalds outdoor shop in uk, can't fault them.
Do have a look at the transparent plastic around the 3 green leds, if you see lines when shining a light on it your watch is affected.
I will try to post a picture here. Apparently this happened on fenix 3hr too
Cheers
  • Maybe this cracks comes from metal band or from table after not caryfull using?

So many different users managed to crack this bit even when not using a metal band? Have a look at the very distinct pattern. If it originated from a hard pointed "knock" it would most likely be star shaped. The spiderweb like pattern might be because the HR sensor assembly bit fits very snuggly into the hole of the steel back of the watch. When heat expands or shrinks the metal just very very slightly it puts pressure on the HR sensor assembly and.."crack". At least that is my theory.
  • Ok so I've replaced my watch twice now due to the resin cracking/chipping off. I even posted my own thread about said issue, one question I have to ask everyone that is are you wearing your watch while showing and if you are is the water really hot? I found after my first one cracked it was a few days after I got out of a really hot shower and the back was completely shattered. The second was about 2 days after a really hot shower and the resin was just starting to crack and this was after only having the device for 2 months. So with this watch it hasn't been in any showers what so ever and I have no cracks, I just wonder if it's where the watch backing gets really hot and expands like most things do then cools to fast and the resin also expands but doesn't shrink at the same time and the backing cracks the resin due to compression. This was really just a huge shot in the dark but it was just my thinking.

So, I got a replacement from Garmin. Service was very quick and good at least. Crossing my fingers that this new unit won't crack up on me. Being without the F5 for a few days reminded med how much I dig this piece of gear and how integral it has become in my life...

I hope i will receive mine back tomorrow. Fingers crossed. I will inform you about Garmin's solution
  • I take my off to shower (I haven't seen any cracks thankfully) - this is my second due to cable issues, third i'll be going for next week. I usually wash it daily or every other day in luke warm water with soap, else I get the dreaded red rash.
  • @Falkenits funny how you miss it. I was the same when I sent my first back. Felt a very long two weeks! Having to start Strava on the phone, etc, seemed a pain - couldn't be bothered to sync up my HR strap so lost that data. That's what makes me loathe sending this one back on the hope I get a gold pin on the third. Then I put it on charge and it beeps like crazy as the data connection breaks, connects, breaks and it reminds me why I want too!

Yep. They become essentials once you incorporate them in your day. Been logging about 200 hours of exercise/activity since I got it 1st of August on it. There is no fitness/activity/multisport tracker kind of option that compares, despite the issues. Fitbit have massive problems with their Ionic from immature software to drowning in 10cm of water. Suunto, albeit cool, is not up to it in terms of functionality and software development. The Fenixes and the 935 are the current kings of multisport tracking. I do hiking/trekking, indoor rowing and strength training with bodyweight/barbells and I can't find another device that checks all the boxes like the F5X does.
  • Thank you for the discussion on this topic. We are actively investigating the reported cracks on the fenix 5 series optical heart rate sensor. If you see this happening on your watch, please contact "][email protected] and include “Fenix 5 Series OHR Cracking” in the subject line of the email. And provide your serial number of the watch, your locale, and pictures of the cracking.
