Garmin Express Cycling Map Update Failure

I'm on the latest beta for my 5x and I noticed today when I tried to sync the watch via Garmin Express that a map update is available for the cycling map. This fails at the "preparing device" phase. I have almost 6GB of free space, so I don't think that is the issue as the file size of the update is listed a 2.13GB.

I've sent the express log to Garmin but there isn't anything really obvious there

Basically there is a line that says
"System.AggregateException: A Task's exception(s) were not observed either by Waiting on the Task or accessing its Exception property. As a result, the unobserved exception was rethrown by the finalizer thread. ---> System.ServiceModel.FaultException: The creator of this fault did not specify a Reason."

which appears to be another way of saying "this went poorly."

Is anyone else seeing this error?

  • I have the same problem for weeks. (5.40; express 5.6.1.0)
Because of a hardware problem my watch was exchanged.
The sync of new one worked for some days, then the same behaviour occured. (5.4; in the meantime 5.6.2.0 was issued).
No sync can be done by Garmin express, neither the cycle maps nor the standard activity or settings sync.

Seems to be a fenix 5X-Garmin Express problem because my fenix 3HR syncs properly.
  • Does anybody of you wrote to garmin fenix beta team for the fix?

No, not to the beta-team, but to the general hotline. They confirmed (more than a week ago) that I'm not the only one and they are trying to fix the problem.

My 5X also syncs properly now, but as mentioned above, I don't have any new map updates, the error just disappeared.

The update which gave the error reported to me that the new version was 2016.20 but according to BaseCamp that version was already installed on my watch.

The question is do we now miss a map update or not?

  • Mine still doesn't sync using Garmin express.
  • I connected mine via express and it looks like it did the map and version 6. Have to check the file dates though.

On Garmin Express Cycle Map Europe v2017.10 seems to be out (3.37 GB)
  • I got the new 2017.10 cycle map, but it won't install for me either. Just updated the watch to v6.0 too.
  • Be happy if could just download the file and drag them to the watch!
  • And looking in the CoreService.log, I'm getting the same error which was reported at the start of this thread:
