problem with heartbeat measurement since 5.10 fenix 5

since update to 5.30 (I thought I had 5.10 but is 5.30) my wrist based heartbeat measurement gives jumps to high bpm then drops and stays as a flatline on tbe same heartbeat. when i take off the watch and out one again it works again but with strange measurements. . started this behavior since update.

  • One more test - "normal" run, some hills, a bit of pace variation, one unplanned pause/stop:
    Fenix 5 5.40 - OHR: average HR 152, max 169, calories 665
Fenix 1 with chest strap: average HR 154, max 175, calories 642

Aside from the fact that the Fenix 5 was lagging when it came to picking up HR increase when going uphill (something that's pretty common for OHR) and that the OHR curve is more "jagged" there was no major issue. OHR in its current generation is not yet ready for serious training anyway and should be taken as such.

That is somewhat acceptable HR data. My fenix 5 doesn't look anywhere near as good even with 5.40.

5.4 doesn't fix it either. I had strange behaviour at the start of a session yesterday even with 5.40 software. I have since uninstalled any apps and CIQ data fields to see if the problem goes away.

5.40 didn't fix it for me either. As soon as I start an activity it locks my heart rate and then steadily declines to the low 80s even though I'm in the 130-140 range.

This looks like a OHR "lock" issue though - quite common actually

You've got a point there. So I made a baseline run with the inbuilt Run app yesterday with all non-built-in apps, widgets and data fields removed from the watch (but three watch faces remaining), no chest strap, and wristband well tightened. The resulting activity shows no problems https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1962234968. This evening I shall reinstall the Auxiliary heart rate data field, wear the ANT+ chest strap, set up an activity display with heart rate and Aux HR on one face, run some intervals, but otherwise try to keep things constant to see what I get.
