Realistic battery life, fenix 5?

Hello all,

So last week I bought a fenix 5. Store had it in open box and on the shelf but it was off, I was worried about it having been on for months on the shelf but they told me it had never been powered on, they only had the 5X on display powered up. Bought it, no discount got home and charged it. The battery was completely discharged.

One of my main reasons for buying the fenix 5 vs a 3 or another less expensive option was battery life - as I am starting to run ultra marathons.

Last Saturday ran my first. I started with 95% charge. GPS only mode (no Glonnass). I played occasionally with the watch during the race, and often moved it into view to see my HR (with backlight at 50%). Halfway into the race, 7 hours in, I notice it is at 40% battery. I changed it to Ultratrac in the activity settings menu, and start avoiding using the backlight or play with it(still glancing at it often to see HR).

My race time was 14 hours 30 minutes. When I made it across the finish line, literally 1 minute after, I glance at the watch to stop the activity and it powered down.

I know actual, realistic device times are often lower than what the manufacturer advertises. Still, advertised GPS mode at 20 hours and Ultratrac 60 hours, seems I should have gotten to the end of this race with a good battery reserve. I am planning longer races later in the season so... this watch might not cut it, apparently. My iphone 7 plus in airplane mode, but doing GPS tracking, went through all of this with 30% power left and me taking some pictures and listening to podcasts on the way.

So question to the group - is this the normal battery life I can expect from this device while tracking activities? Or did I get a dud or a battery affected by it being a showroom device?

Unsure if I am just being paranoid and need to enjoy the device and go Ultratrac from the start, turn off the backlight (not needed to be honest).

Thanks all,

Juan
  • just for sake of completness: I gave up with my drainy fenix 5 which was using 1.2-1.8%/hour for weeks... with all the hard resets and tests of firmware.

I requested an exchange from my retailer. The new one with FW 12.40 had much more coherent battery drain (0.2-0.3%/hours in watch mode, what I had before with my first one. I have the new one for almost a week now). I just upgraded it today to FW 12.50 (and new sensor hub 6.50). I hope it will remain stable after the upgrade.

I finally do not know if the problem was HW or SW related (or both)... what I can say is that if Garmin would have a dedicated webpage mentioning clearly the current issues identified on devices and tackled by their development team, I would have been maybe more patient to wait new FW... after more that 3 weeks, I gave up.

I have updated to 12.50 with SNS 6.50 and gps 2.50. Same battery drain... about 0.5-0.6 per hour.

I am still blow away by some others who have 0.2-0.3 /hour :)

Garmin! That's a big difference! What is to be done?
  • I made some changes that seems to help slightly... This week I have just had 2 workouts (totaling 3 hours of running), and I have 57% battery left (charged monday evening, so 5 and a half day).

I got the upgrade to 12.50, GPS 2.5, Wifi: 2.4, SNS 6.5 and WHR 20.03.31..

I believe the biggest impact on battery drain was using a light background instead of dark (I use the backlight alot less, since it's easier to read), remove calories and step count from the watch face for alot less frequent screen updates... Right now I only have sunset and date, no second hand...

  • Do not know, if anyone remains in 12.21 ... but to share my experience is that, after got the refurbished that changed the original with the excesive battery drain, leave an usage of more than 22 days, only as watch, with smart notifications (just calls) and bluetooth allways enabled. Anyone is getting a battery duration as longer as this with newer soft?

Hi, i'm on my second Fenix 5, after i ask for a replacement on my first one. Both came with batteries dead out of the box, but my first one didn't last for more than 4 days.
The second one seems better though... After first two charging cycles i'm getting 6.5% per day battery drain on 12.50 software. For me is the best i got from this watch, which is a dissapointment after using Fenix 3 for 2 years.
    So:
    Software 12. 50
No training done in the last 2 weeks.
Bluetooth enabled just for several minutes daily yo sync with my phone.
    Backlight 5%
??????Battery life in watch mode with stock watch face, 14-15 days.
    ???
  • My second Fenix has fw 12.40, gps 4.40, sensor 6.20, whr 20.03.31. It has a drain of ~7% in 48 hours in smartwatch mode, which equals 0,15% / hour.
I have disabled automatic updates, as it works perfectly right now (from the battery consumption point of view) as I don't want to risk it getting worse.
The first one that I sent back in January had a drain of >1% hour.

Well, the only thing that comes to my mind is that this battery consumption is caused by the hardware. I had the same consumption by 12.40, before updating.
I still have 12 more days in which i can return the watch and get a refound.
I like the watch, it's great for what i need but if it does this after 20 days...
    Any other ideas, anyone?
  • Since my friend also has problems with the Fenix 5 has become aware of this post.
The clock of my friend consumes about 1.2% per hour.
My Fenix 5 Saphir I bought immediately after the release in 2017 (just under 2 years old) and consumes 0.177% per hour - I've probably caught a very good model.
Bluetooth, HR, Wi-Fi, pedometer are always on and the clock is connected to the smartphone. I always wear the clock.
I have to say that the consumption has never changed significantly, regardless of the software version.

Since 12.30 update my battery is draining 14% a day no workout or run only in watch mode. Before it last for 14 days, the watch is relative new, I bought it on Jun 2018 so it still should be around 14 days still in watch mode. No backlight working. I did a reset of the phone two days ago but the battery drain pace is fast. I even drop every third party watchface and app. Right now the watch is at 12.50 GPS 2.5 sensor 6.5 whr 20.03.31 lasting 7 days

Sorry in my last post where said "reset of the phone" must said "reset of the watch"
