Realistic battery life, fenix 5?

Hello all,

So last week I bought a fenix 5. Store had it in open box and on the shelf but it was off, I was worried about it having been on for months on the shelf but they told me it had never been powered on, they only had the 5X on display powered up. Bought it, no discount got home and charged it. The battery was completely discharged.

One of my main reasons for buying the fenix 5 vs a 3 or another less expensive option was battery life - as I am starting to run ultra marathons.

Last Saturday ran my first. I started with 95% charge. GPS only mode (no Glonnass). I played occasionally with the watch during the race, and often moved it into view to see my HR (with backlight at 50%). Halfway into the race, 7 hours in, I notice it is at 40% battery. I changed it to Ultratrac in the activity settings menu, and start avoiding using the backlight or play with it(still glancing at it often to see HR).

My race time was 14 hours 30 minutes. When I made it across the finish line, literally 1 minute after, I glance at the watch to stop the activity and it powered down.

I know actual, realistic device times are often lower than what the manufacturer advertises. Still, advertised GPS mode at 20 hours and Ultratrac 60 hours, seems I should have gotten to the end of this race with a good battery reserve. I am planning longer races later in the season so... this watch might not cut it, apparently. My iphone 7 plus in airplane mode, but doing GPS tracking, went through all of this with 30% power left and me taking some pictures and listening to podcasts on the way.

So question to the group - is this the normal battery life I can expect from this device while tracking activities? Or did I get a dud or a battery affected by it being a showroom device?

Unsure if I am just being paranoid and need to enjoy the device and go Ultratrac from the start, turn off the backlight (not needed to be honest).

Thanks all,

Juan
  • Garmin just finished testing my watch, it was on for 22 hours with 10% battery left, so they claim it's perfect. They did not care about the "smartwatch-mode battery drain"-problem, and did not test it. The reply I got was that 5 days + 3 hours of training was really good, and since the specs claim up to 14 days, it was perfectly valid to only last for 5 days:mad:

Not very pleased with their support right now....

Do anyone uses any third party widget? For battery for example?

I have a friend that has a Fenix 5 and has about 2 weeks per battery charge :) it’s at 3-4 percent per day... I sometimes loose that much in 5 hours :)

I wrote to support and they also told me that anthing “under 20 percent per day” is ok, with no activities whatsoever. That would be ok if every watch would be at 20 per day :)

On the other hand, the battery percentage is only an aproximation. It is not correct to charge 100% and after 24 hours if it is at 80% to believe that it will
last 5 days exactly. Because maybe at 50% it will drop only 15% per day.

I have 6.20 as “sensor hub”. Never did betas. I am on 12.40 fw.

Just realised that some of you are on 6.25.

Is that from a beta update?
  • For the record, pre the latest update my battery life was fantastic, I banged on about how good it was so much that my son purchased an F5 plus and his battery life is insanely long.
  • just for the update -> I tested the beta 12.81, but still no improvment on my side for battery drain, still at 1.3-1.6%/hour in watchmode... does any of you see an improvment with such beta?

Hi, how can I only update the hub sensor at 6.25 of my Fenix 5?

I did a download on 12.21, but my sensor is 6.40 and not 6.25
  • [h=2]You should be able to drop the 6.25 file into the correct folder (step 3) and remove the 6.40 file. Out of curiosity where did you get sensor hub 6.40?

    Installation Instructions[/h]
    • Download and unzip fenix_***Beta.zip
    • Place the gupdate.gcd file, found in the System_v*** folder, into the \GARMIN folder of the device
    • Place the gupXXXX.gcd file, found in the Sensor Hub_v*** folder, into the \GARMIN\REMOTESW folder of the device

    • Place the gupXXXX.gcd file, found in the GPS_v*** folder, into the \GARMIN\REMOTESW folder of the device
    • If you have a WiFi-enabled device, place the gupXXXX.gcd file, found in the WiFi_v*** folder, into the \GARMIN\REMOTESW folder of the device
    • Place all files found in the Text_v*** folder into the \Garmin\TEXT folder of the device
    • Disconnect from your computer and proceed through the update.
    • If you would like to revert to the last public release software, drop the gupdate.gcd file, found in the System_Backdate_v1100 folder, into the \GARMIN folder of the device.
    • NOTE: If you revert to an older version of software, all of your settings will be reset to defaults.

Hello, sensor hub 640 is in the 12.40 update. All the steps for downgrade are performed perfectly, but only sensor hub remains 640

I can confirm that I have 12.40 and my sensor hub is at 6.20. Maybe 12.81 beta to have the 6.40 sensor hub? Never tried a beta.

I have the battery consumption of about 1 - 1.4% per hour, my Fenix 5 has the 12.40 firmware with sensor hub 6.40. I tried downgrade at 12.21 but the hub sensor remains 6.40, I can't install 6.25. from what I read it looks like 12.21a set the battery drain with sensor 6.25 how can I solve the problem of installing the hub sensor 6.25 computer program on my Fenix 5? The downgrade procedure is perfect, but the hub sensor still remains 6.40. Thank you
