Resuming and Activity while following a Course

I created a hiking course using RouteCourse (if you don't have this app, I highly recommend it). The route was tracking beautifully and alerting me how much distance and estimated time was remaining. Then we stopped for lunch, so I hit Start > Resume Later to "pause" the activity. Right at that time a pop up occurred that said "Route Complete", though I was only about halfway done. After lunch, I restarted the hiking activity, but my route was no longer loaded. I was able to reload to route by going to Navigation > Routes > (Route Name) as I had done in the beginning. It loaded fine, but it considered this a "new hike" so it was trying to tell me I was too far from the starting point of the hike, and it wouldn't calculate estimated time/distance to complete until I started near the beginning.

Does anyone know how to load a course which you are already partway through, yet have it properly calculate the time/distance/elevation remaining?

Same issue here with a 935.
  • The same thing happened to me when I stopped navigation during a run. It was not my intention to do that, I changed a navigation option and 5x stopped the navigation without warning.
When I started the navigation again, like you, it didn't find my place in the loaded course and routed me to the beginning.

If you restart the activity from scratch, will it then try to find your actual point in the loaded course?

    I reported this here https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?374880-Resume-Later-causes-Course-Navigation-failure&p=977054#post977054

So the short answer is no.
I avoid the resume later problem but just pausing. You get a 30 second countdown before it autosaves.

However, the situation of starting late on the course or (as in your case) staring the course half-way in is still an issue. The watch attempts to send you back to the start rather than pick up the course were you are. The next waypoint field is the start point and the distance remaining grows as you go away from it. So for example on a 10 mile course when you reach the end it will report 10 mile to the next waypoint (the start) and 20 mile to the end.

This is hopeless of course. So always make sure that you start the course at the beginning before pressing start (recording).

The appropriate solution? Garmin needs to fix this. It is a bug. It does not happen with the F3 which will pick up on a course wherever you start on it and route you to the end correctly.
  • No it will not pick up where you start.

You need to 'do course' before starting the recording. If you 'do course' along the way wherever you are the watch tries to route you back to the beginning and you get none of your upcoming waypoints.

Garmin need to fix this bug.

The F3 quite happily allows you to pick up on a course wherever you start or resume it.

Edit: Apologies for double post on this. One went missing and the reappeared!
  • I have an Epix and a Fenix 5X. I use them while inline skating, but not for running or hiking. With both devices I've observed that starting course navigation while somewhere out on the course does initially want to route me to the start. Or in the case of an out-and-back over the same roads, if I start navigation on the return leg it initially wants my to follow the course in the wrong direction. However, in most cases if I wait a while (3-5 minutes perhaps?), both devices eventually seem to figure out that I'm already out on the course, and even that I'm on the return leg in the case of the out-and-back course. I'm running the latest available firmware in both devices...
  • Well TermiSkater with my F5X, no matter how long I leave (and I have dones so for miles on four courses now) it will always stay as trying to route me back to start. So I would not want to rely on it doing as you have witnessed as I expect it will not be every time/course you do. Even if it behaves like this for you it is still a bug that needs fixing.
  • How is it with Fenix 5/5s?

No it will not pick up where you start.

I know, this is Fenix 5x forum. But do somebody know, if this behaviour is also in case of Fenix5/5s? I have F3 and I change the course during the run very often. Mainly when I have some optional courses prepared. When I read this info, in case I have to change, I would like to know this. The map is not so important as the ability to switch between courses during running activity.

Yes, it is. See this https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?376293-Navigation-(Problems)&p=985619#post985619

There may not be any outdoorsmen left in Garminsville, too busy checking social media.

In this setting - (a TBT navigation is missing!):

In my Fenix5X the distance is correct when I am beginning the course "not a start".

    * I am starting the new activity, e.g. "Walk" (I am pressing 2x Start).
    * My current position: ca 1/2 of test course
    * I am pressing "Navigation" (HotKey)* and i am loading course: "Test" (ca 13 km):

    * I am starting the navigation

    * Distance to the destination: 5,51 km, not 12,9 km - correctly:
