Navigation issues, questions

Coming from the F3, i got a tcx file, converted it to a fit file using some utility and placed in the newfiles directory and i was good to go. Not so much with the F5. The course loaded properly and the map looked fine, but the tbt directions were all over the place. It was as if the watch tried to route me the quickest way or something ignoring the course i loaded. I tried various settings along the way like follow course instead of map, i tried lock on roads on and off, all to no avail. My friend loaded the same course on his f3 and had no issues. Mine wanted me to turn when i should be going straight, etc. Any ideas what iam missing?

    Are the settings correct?
    Settings->Activities&Apps->(...)->Routing->Courses->Follow Course
  • Yes, i tried map and follow course, in both cases it appears like the f5x was rerouting me. I believe it did that because i had avoid major highways on and it interpreted some of those roads as major highways. Reading how the edge series handle nav, they have a setting called recalculate and you can turn it off or set it to prompt you before the watch decides to reroute you. The f5x doesn't seem to have this setting which is a problem. So if you miss a turn and go off course the watch will seemingly reroute you trying to get you to the finish line in the shortest time or distance (setting) and that is likely not what you want. I hope they add the recalculate setting.

Yes, i tried map and follow course,

Did you change it during the navigation?
Option "Follow course" must be placed before beginning the navigation.

Yes, I changed it during the course, not at the start. So if I had "follow course" set in the beginning of the ride would that force the watch not to recalculate a route for me? In other words does follow course equate to the edge series when they disable recalculate?

Also not sure why the watch shouldn't know that I want to follow a course when I select DO COURSE. it confusing.

Edit: did a run with follow course and in this mode the 5x isn't giving me tbt prompts nor dist to next. This is something the f3 had, i hope is a bug and not the way it was intended to work.
  • hi guys , i have questions about navigation it self .

1, course navigation and activity with F3 when you selected course next step was select activity you will perform ( such as bike , run ) .. with F5x there is nothing like that , you select start > navigate > course > go. there is no "option" to select what type of activity you are going to do. once done within GC activity is displayed as unknown and you have to manually update . example bike.

2 there are 2 places where you can adjust select navigation fields..
place1 settings > navigation > data screens - if I change here data screens what activities will be impacted or where this change will be reflected...

place2 settings > activities/apps> navigate > data screens - if I change data screens here , change will be reflected in activities when i use navigation ( course for example) start>navigate>course....

it is confusing what is difference between these 2 navigate menu's which serve to what.

    cheers
  • Garmin has a still a way to go regarding menu set-up and user friendliness on the 5X. The other day I was trying to sort out my settings and ended up with this screen. I gave up, mildly confused :)
  • 'Navigate' is a built in app profile like 'Run' or 'Walk'. So 'Navigate Settings are to change the data screens, etc for that profile.
  • Yesterday, I drew a 60KM route on Garmin Connect and sent it to watch. I cycled the route and turn alerts was working. Latest version Fenix 5X.

Are your settings set to follow map or follow course?

Today, I loaded a course from a previous activity and I also got turn prompts (set up to follow course), but it said something like only the 50 points are stored and the rest will be truncated. In fact I got a bunch of turn prompts that stopped after about 40 miles of biking. Two observations, either they did something to GC to correct the no TBT when follow course or, at least for me, it works when you its from a previous activity but not when its created in GC or imported else where.

Secondly, I dont know if I am the only one, but I struggle to see the magenta track and the blue triangle that indicates my current position. I could swear that on the F3 the triangle was larger. I also struggle to see the track showing the course already done (cyan on my watch, color is user selectable) My recommendations are:
    1. Make the the current position triangle larger,
    2. Make the course track to follow thicker
    3. For the cyan (or what ever color you chose) that shows track completed, make it the same width as the track that you haven't covered yet (magenta).

No, you are not alone with this problem , it's quite impossible running to see the track showing the course already done, on Your watch is cyan, but on mine is black and anyway it show cyan. Only the track that you have already done but not yet saved is black, but saving activity it turns to cyan....I don't know if there is something wrong on my settings but hope Garmin will change this problem.
