Grade field showing zero

Is anyone else getting zero in the grade/gradient field during (running) activity most of the time?
Occasionally it does show a value (although I believe mostly while cycling), but mostly it does not.

Garmin support's only recommendation was update firmware (which is already at most recent version 3.30) and to factory reset the device, which I don't exactly feel like doing for something that is not working both on my Fenix 5 Sapphire as well as my girlfriend's Fenix 5S.

Is this a bug being worked on by Garmin to be fixed in a next firmware version?

Thanks,
Joost

For cycling, mine has been working fine. I don't review it that much when running (most of my runs have been pretty flat since acquiring the F5) but it seemed to be working OK on the one hilly trail run I've taken with the F5. I have "auto climb" enabled for both cycling and trail running (not regular running) and the climbing screen set up the same as my top screen except substituting "grade" for the distance field. This shows me the grade number only when I really want to see it (when I'm climbing, of course).
  • Same issue

In running activities gradient display 0 (sometimes 1). Autoswitch when climbing is also not working properly.
  • I still have the same issue despite hard reset of my fenix 5. Do you still have the issue or were you able to solve it?
  • Has anyone come up with a solution to this? I currently have the fenix 5s and grade has never shown anything besides 0 and where I live am we have some very steep hills. I wanted to know the grade of several hills but can’t get a reading. Does it only work for tuning and cycling? I have my grade set for hikes only but seems odd that it wouldn’t wrk all the time. Suggestions?
  • Ive never seen grade working on my 5x either..always stays at 0 ( using hike )
unlike my 3hr that works perfectly.
I stopped using the broken datafield, so haven't tried it on v8.0 yet.
I'll give V8.0 a test and see what happens...

Hello, I am F5 owner for almost a week.
Mine In running activitie shows gradient between 0-8 but not all the time most of the time it is 0.

When the Missus asked '"what grade is this hill?" I proudly announced that my very expensive and sophisticated Fenix 5x has a data field for that. I set it up and started the activity and initially it showed "0". 10 mins later, halfway up the nice, steep (probably about grade 5) hill, and the watch still showed "0". It continued to show "0" regardless of what sort of slope we were on.
    Version 8.0.

Y'know, I am really, really tired of all the broken stuff on this watch.... It's embarrassing, annoying and disappointing.

Gents, I can see that I am not the only one whose F5x shows only "0" grade for running and cycling. When tested with my F3 it showed perfectly only F5x still showed 0. I have tried a hard and soft reset but it did not help. When garmin is coming up with a solution? or any other advice?
  • VojtoD Are you getting any other elevation data? If not, please take a look at the following troubleshooting steps: Troubleshooting steps for fenix Chronos and fenix 5 altimeter and barometer

I have the same. I did 23km hike with about a 1000 m climbing yesterday and grade field was almost always showing 0 - very occasionally I'd see 1 or -1. Despite my vertical speed being in the range of 500+ m/hours (according to the device), and the hill pretty steep, grade stayed at 0. This is grade field issue, not barometer/altimeter issue. Altimeter seems to be plenty accurate, and vertical speed, while lazy, seems to change.

Here's the activity for reference: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2765007439. You can see the elevation changes fine. The grade is not logged, but again, if it was, it would mostly be 0.
