Steps while on indoor bike

Hi

I was a bit disappointed this morning after 2 hours on a turbo trainer that my F5 had counted over 4000 steps while in an indoor bike activity.

Surely it shouldn't count steps while cycling? I need to test it again, but I just rolled out of bed & walked to the back of my garage, 100 steps at the most.

Any ideas if it is something I need to change in the setting?

Thanks,

Rob
  • The measurement of steps is not literally steps. Whatever fitness exercise you do the energy you burn is converted into steps. It is a movement measurement.

But then my calorie burn is way off as I have the 2 hour ride giving me 1100cals plus the steps on top giving another 800 (ish)

Garmins less expensive watches don't convert to steps....
  • It also does the same when swimming, and I assumed it was a bug. Shouldn't there be a way to measure steps and activity separately?
  • This is something they'll sort out over time, as they have done with the other devices. Still, make sure Garmin know of it by contacting support.

Did you record the indoor training on the watch (using the Bike Indoor profile) ?

When I use the trainer I always record on the watch too (even though I'm using Zwift) so that the watch can have accurate data for the fitness advisor stuff and I've never noticed it recoding steps as I was doing this. I also did a ride outside on the bike yesterday which I primarily use a Edge 1000 with but for the same reason above I also record it on the watch (and then delete one of them off of the connect website), and again it recorded no steps during this.

Yes, I was using the Bike Indoor profile, using Zwift also. Started at 5:15am for 2 hours, so there is no way I'd taken 4000 steps....

Yes, using the bike indoor activity, using zwift also. I started at 5:15am for 2 hours, I'd not walked anywhere apart from to my garage.

    Very odd.

Just double checking my own data; on Friday at 15:45 i started a Zwift ride and just did 30 minutes on there and during that time I'm seeing no steps recorded other than the few I did around the house getting ready.
