New Watch Menu Language

Hello,
This morning I was charging watch, and I check folders in watch memory. I saw the language files and I open a random one with notepad.
Can we edit that files ? If it is possible , I will translate menus to my native language.
  • Tried it myself today.
    Yes, you can.

    Not possible:
Adding a new (not existing) file because it seems that all available language files available in language menu in the watch seems to be hardcoded wothin the system

    Possible:
Edit a already existing language file to your wishes.
ONLY line 1&2 in each language file are also be hardcoded.
First line seems to contain a string that contains a version of the language and a string with that the sStem identifying the language file.
The second line seems also be hardcoded.
    All other lines are editable.

    Hope this helps you...
  • Hi,

when I edit an existing language file in the Garmin/Text folder (without modifying the 2 first lines as you mention) when I disconnect the watch and change the language none of my modifications are applied
I still see the initial language file as if Garmin express was re-forcing the update to the original language file.

Is there something to do/not to do to make some manual changes in a Text file ?

Basically, I bought my Fenix 5 in Asia (APAC version) and would like to modify any of the language file to have my watch in French

Any help would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks.
  • You cannot edit files directly, presumably to protect the integrity of the file system.

After editing the language file on an external device, drop the new file in the GARMIN/NEWFILES folder. That's the normal way to update files but I have not tried this myself with language files. After disconnecting from your PC it should install your new file.

    Two tips:

    • Keep a copy of the original file you edited
    • Remember the sequence of key strokes to change the language so you can change it back if it al goes wrong
  • Thanks for the help & the follow up, nevertheless even avter editing an existing language file on a remote drive, then copy-paste in Garmin/New Files, nothing happens.
Did somebody managed to modify an language file on Fenix 5 ?

Sry, but isn't true. It is possible as i wrote already.

Made it now again. My prefered language is german and is atm set on my watch.

    What I've done:
    1) connect my watch trough USB to PC
    2) opened GERMAN.LN3 in /GARMIN/TEXT/ with notepadd++
    3) changed all words "Sprache" (german for language) to "I am edited" and saved the changes
    4) disconnected the watch from pc

To get your changes active you have to switch to another language and back to the modified one.
This works - see the screenshot.

I'm not sure what garmin express is doing with the modified languagefile - will it ignore or replace it with an not modified one... you have to try yourself.

And at every systemupdate the file will be replaced by an not modified one... so keep everytime a backup in your backhand...
  • Thank you.
I did exactly the same as you described, but no effect.
Maybe this is an issue proper to APAC version of Fenix 5, seems that languages files modifications are not applied (maybe they are hardcoded in the firmware like for English language ?)

    Any help would be welcome
  • Could be...your conclusion sounds plausible...

APAC version is a special version even with its own firmware line. Maybe it has some internal difference too such as more memory or a different chip. So it probably has different language structure inside.
