Fenix 5x too big/heavy? Thinking of Forerunner 935...

Although I just got the watch, after wearing it for just about an hour, it's starting to feel too big, heavy, and ungainly to me.

It's an amazing piece of technology, and the reason I got it was that I was a bit disappointed with a few of the things lacking on my Forerunner 630 (optical heart sensor, barometric pressure sensor, compass, etc.), and the things it has that are annoying (touch screen isn't the easiest thing to use).

But since the only things that the Fenix 5x has that put it above the 5s (maps/huge memory and battery), and the Forerunner 935 (same as 5s, but plastic) aren't that crucial to me, I'm wondering if a Forerunner 935 would be more what I want. It'd be lighter and somewhat smaller, but has most of the same features.

The main reason I favored the Fenix 5x was because I like to do long-distance bike touring, and I hate depending on my phone for navigation, since GPS eats power like crazy. I also didn't want to get a bike-specific Garmin (the 1000 or 820, for example) - I wanted a watch form-factor.

Have any of you played with a Forerunner 935, and can compare it to the Fenix 5x? Is it that much easier on the wrist, less obtrusive, etc?

  • I tried on the 935 and it was so light it felt like a cheap Casio, not a 500$ watch.

  • I don't get it.

It's not the lightest whisp of a watch, I get it.

But...I've been wearing mine for a month now and I'm not sure what the huge deal is. I don't "notice" it...other than it's the sweetest coolest bit of tech I've ever worn on my body.
  • When I went from a 920xt to my old F3 I thought I hated the weight.. then a week later I quit noticing it. Just wear it...

Not noticed the difference. I had a Vivoactive before and I am already used to the extra weight

To be honest only you can answer your question, as per the other responses, I just wear it and don't notice its there.

I hardly notice I'm wearing it...
  • My current device is a Garmin Forerunner 630, so I'm used to the lightness of that.

In any case, I decided to send back the Fenix 5x and ordered a Forerunner 935 - hopefully it'll suit. :-/

    Hi tbessie

How did you find the FR 935 when it arrived?

    Update would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

  • Fenix 5X is only for people who search map capabilities. If you dont search that fenix 5X its not your watch (for me its perfect)

You see I disagree with that, I had an F3 prior to the 5X and I bought my F5 specifically because of the size, it's not too big on my wrist and it doesn't look out of place either.

I have owned a couple of decent purely analogue watches, I owned a small Omega Seamaster which I loved but I knew when I purchased it that I should have gone for the larger size, I mean I don't exactly have large hands or wrists but that watch looked too small. I found the same thing with the Apple Watch (I recently purchased the AW 3 non-gsm and I have worn it for all of about 1 week), even with the 42mm watch I would have preferred something larger. Of the three watches I currently own the AW is the smallest, followed up by my analogue and then the 5x.

I love the size of the 5X, I am not a map user, I tend to use it to monitor steps and will be using it again shortly to use for walking / running but the size has never been an issue for me.
