Running Dynamics Data Dropouts

Hi

I hope somebody can help that has experienced this but I am not finding recent issues in the Garmin forums (and not on the Fenix 5):

I have started using a new Fenix 5 Sapphire Performer Bundle with the included HRM TRI. When running it looks as though heart rate tracks fine but running dynamics data drops out (the running dynamics screens disappear during the run and then reappear again later on when the Fenix picks up the signal again). When going to settings the HRM TRI is still listed as "Connected". Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot or fix this or do I need to return the watch? I am using the latest firmware on the watch (2.9) and HRM TRI (4.3).

Thanks for your help!
  • Just to add, I've just done a quick test with the watch on table, but angled so I can see the screen, then turn the running app on and switch to an RD screen. If I jog on the spot and slowly move away I can still see the RD numbers changing as I go faster/slower and more/less bounce (the screen I had on was GCT balance top half and GCT/cadence lower half); I've got over 3 metres away and all still working (can't really see the screen sufficiently well to test beyond 3 metres).

As for type of reset; your watch is not frozen, so I'd say the on watch Menu>Settings>System>Restore Defaults will be fine to clear all of the sensor pairings and settings (I think it still leaves activities and courses on the watch though). Before you start it's always worth copying (via usb cable) the whole watch /Garmin drive to your PC/Mac before doing a reset, in case there are any activities/screen shots/courses that are on the watch that you might still want the original copies of (I do that before installing any new beta software as a matter of routine).

Addition: some more info on reset methods using buttons on the watch here https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch/en-GB/faq/content/wxPmdnWsev1xGRUf58oDC8 and, as I mentioned before, in this case I do not recommend restoring settings afterwards https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch/en-GB/faq/content/hWholZ8uPZ6PboXu5Nf7d6 as you'll likely reinstate any problems with the sensor settings.

Also, just to confirm you have the right associated ANT software for 2.96 beta, just go Menu>Settings>About scroll down to the third page and confirm you have: GPS 4.30, Wi-Fi 2.30, CIQ 2.3.0, BLE/ANT/SNS 2.90 and WHR 20.03.20 (if any of these are not correct, then you've missed out installing one of the components of 2.96 beta)
  • Thanks for the input Crispin. I can confirm that I have done a reset (first a "Reset to default settings" and then a Master Reset using the lap button and switching the device off and on). There is absolutely no improvement.

I agree that this is likely a hardware fault and that the device would need to be returned for replacement.

I've reset mine and I'll be heading out to test it in the next 30mins or so. I'll report straight back.

Just tested mine post reset and it's still no good. I'll try returning it tomorrow whilst I still have chance. Not sure what to do about a replacement. 935, silver f5 or even suunto.
  • If either of you do have any friends with RD enabled Garmin watches, I'd definitely try to test your HRM Tri/Run straps paired to those watches; it's pretty straight forward phoning Garmin and getting the strap replaced if it turns out that's at fault and strengthens your case to return the Fenix 5 for a replacement/refund if it's not the strap.
  • I unfortunately do not have another RD enabled device. However, I gather TheIncredibleFlash tested it with his Garmin Fenix 3 and everything was fine which points to a Fenix 5 hardware issue.

I think it was fine with my f3 but I can't say with 100% certainty as I never categorically tested it with my arm by my side.

Unfortunately no longer have the f3 or another rd device. I'll try and find someone that'll let me pair with theirs but I'm tempted to just return it tomorrow.

I'm can't be certain it's the watch and it would be great to test it further but I'm just worried about time is ticking on.

Interestingly since the reset both Running Dynamics screens are only showing Cadence for all the data fields... tried reverting to 2.90 but it isn't having it.

I had the same - you just need to manually change each field to one of the RD data fields

Hmmm never had it do that before.

Just tried what Crispin did and put my watch on the table and jogged on the spot slowly moving backwards. I got a good couple of metres away before the running dynamics data dropped out. Really not sure what to do with it to be honest.

What are you planning to do?
