Running Dynamics Data Dropouts

Hi

I hope somebody can help that has experienced this but I am not finding recent issues in the Garmin forums (and not on the Fenix 5):

I have started using a new Fenix 5 Sapphire Performer Bundle with the included HRM TRI. When running it looks as though heart rate tracks fine but running dynamics data drops out (the running dynamics screens disappear during the run and then reappear again later on when the Fenix picks up the signal again). When going to settings the HRM TRI is still listed as "Connected". Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot or fix this or do I need to return the watch? I am using the latest firmware on the watch (2.9) and HRM TRI (4.3).

Thanks for your help!
  • @ColinvZ, reading through this thread I can't see anywhere that you've had your HRM Tri attached to another Garmin watch with it working perfectly; which means you can't rule out that the HRM Tri has a fault.

Thanks for the reply! I fully agree and I really hope the issue is the HRM TRI. Unfortunately I do not have another Garmin unit that can receive running dynamics data. I will see what Garmin Support says - I would definitely prefer to just replace the HRM TRI and not go through a full return process.

Hi Crispin, I'm potentially seeing the same issues with drop outs. I'll try like Colin suggests and hold my f5 further away from my hrm-run

Also from my point of view my hrm-run was working fine with my f3 so I'm fairly certain it must be an issue with the f5

Just been for a run now and sure enough if I drop my arm and hold my watch by my hip the running dynamics data drops out
  • Thanks for the confirmation. Do you thing this something that can be resolved via firmware or is it a hardware issue? As the issue is not widespread it appears to be a hardware issue unique to our units?

I've come across at least one other person experiencing the same issue as us. I'd like to think it's a firmware issue but I may just return mine anyway rather than live with the uncertainty. Would be good if one of the other guys on here could test theirs for us.
  • If we assume it is a software issue, and that I've now done 2 x 10km runs on 2.96 beta (let alone all the runs I've done on earlier software versions), each run with a different HRM Run strap, and I've seen no HR or RD data drop outs in either (I've just got back in from the second run and did try to get things to drop out by stretching my arm away from the sensor); then it's safe to say that it is possible for things to work just fine and that there's something going on with your setup or corruption of your setup during a previous software update. I know it's boring, but have you tried resetting the watch back to factory settings (without restoring any backed up settings files - that may perpetuate an old settings issue), then pair the HRM Tri/Run to the clean reset watch, then test again? If you still get problems after all of that, I can't seeing the issue being anything other than a hardware fault with either the strap or the watch; either way only an exchange of hardware will fix that (via Garmin CS or the shop you purchased it from).

I jogged ten metres or so with my arm by my side and the gaps in data are pretty obvious. I've done a number of runs with the watch and all have looked fine. The thing that alerted me to a potential problem was a workout where I walked during some tough intervals. I've never had or at least noticed any issues with my hrm-run when used with my f3 but I've never tested it in this way.

How long did you run for with your arm down?

I'll do a reset today and give it another test but if I still have an issue i think I'll take it back to the shop whilst I still have a chance of them refunding it.

It's a reasonably regular occurrence for me when running from home at the weekend with my dog; so generally around 20-30 seconds whilst I'm holding my dog's line passing other people with dogs or on bikes etc (or even longer at times if holding a poo bag until the next bin - more info than you wanted I'm sure ;) ).

Definitely more info than I need but I appreciate the reply and help. Is it just the usual factory reset on the watch that you recommend doing? I'll give it a try now and head out for another run. Unfortunately I reckon I'm out of the easy refund time period any; I've had the watch just over a couple of weeks purchased from Cotswold online.
