Running Dynamics Data Dropouts

Hi

I hope somebody can help that has experienced this but I am not finding recent issues in the Garmin forums (and not on the Fenix 5):

I have started using a new Fenix 5 Sapphire Performer Bundle with the included HRM TRI. When running it looks as though heart rate tracks fine but running dynamics data drops out (the running dynamics screens disappear during the run and then reappear again later on when the Fenix picks up the signal again). When going to settings the HRM TRI is still listed as "Connected". Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot or fix this or do I need to return the watch? I am using the latest firmware on the watch (2.9) and HRM TRI (4.3).

Thanks for your help!
  • I have just had an extremely frustrating and ultimately disappointing one hour online chat with Garmin support. They are basically unwilling to assist. They argue that RD data is not available while walking (which is beside the issue as I experienced this while running and RD data such as stride length is available while walking).

They then stated that as I decided to install beta software I must direct software questions to the beta team as they do not believe I have a hardware issue. This despite their inability to explain the HRM profile dropouts etc. in several session I made available to them. I have requested that the matter is escalated to somebody else but they refuse to assist as they ar enow blaming the issue on beta software (despite it being there on 2.90 and the beta software ONLY being installed because of the issue in the first place).

At the moment I am extremely disappointed in Garmin (due to their attitude on this issue) and I am considering returning everything and saying goodbye to Garmin for good - such arrogance is unacceptable.

I've looked back over all my f5 runs and quite a number of them show gaps in rd data, all be it really short and infrequent on some but at points when there was no way I was doing anything other than running normally.

Pretty sure I'll be returning mine tomorrow but not a clue what I'll do to replace it.
  • Old Version of HRM-RUN seems fine

It seems that the old HRM-RUN (updated to the latest software version just the strap nothing else attached ) is fine no drop outs that I can see. Could it be the newer versions broadcast a weaker signal maybe Gamin's attempt at conserving battery life?

My earlier post seems to have gone missing. This is with the 'older' version of the HRM-RUN with the latest firmware nothing else attached. Seems fine. Could it be newer version has a weaker signal?
  • I did a slow run today with the 2.96 beta firmware on a F5 sapphire, HRM4-Run, and a STRYD.

First time the RD data did show zero drops during a run. Also no drops for the STRYD data.

Happy to see, that the beta firmware improved ANT connectivity...at least for me.
  • For those still struggling with Ant+ reception, DC Rainmaker's comment (#1037) under his Fenix 5 review is concerning:

"In a nutshell, nothing in terms of good news there.

It seems both Garmin and Stryd are trending towards the 5 having lower signal reception than the 5X. The 5S sits somewhere in the middle."

Ultimately, the issue therefore appears hardware related although he notes that both companies are "working on the problem".

Thanks for the heads up ColinvZ. I managed to return my f5 black Sapphire for a refund today and had just ordered a standard silver from Amazon UK. At the moment I'm tempted to cancel and wait for the dust to settle on some of these issues.

Have to revise my comment. Massive dropouts during the run today. Will contact Garmin immediately, also based on the heads up from ColinvZ.

Sorry to hear you're still having issues. I returned mine for having this issue believing I was the only experiencing it. It now seems there are a few people reporting this issue so hopefully it's a firmware issue. I still have an f5 silver on order but I'm still tempted to cancel to wait for the dust to settle.

Let me know what Garmin say to you.

Dropouts haven't been an issue for me because I don't have anything paired to my F5 except my phone. However I had considered getting a STRYD, but no longer plan to do so unless this problem is resolved.
