Problems with Ant+ connectivity

Does anybody NOT have problems with third party ANT+ devices and the F5? My experience is as follows:
- Stryd: not usable; tons of drop-outs on runs. Most importantly long pauses of 30-60s with zero values
- Powertap P1 pedals: around 10-20 drop-outs on a 50 mile ride; most of these drops are really short
- Stages: Useless - zero connectivity - tried Bluetooth and ANT+

Wondering if the F5 is just flawed (weak antennas?) or if I got a bad model. Spoke to Garmin support two weeks ago and they asked me to wait for further software updates.

Are there people out there that do not have these kind of problems?

    Confirmed.
Always had lots of drop-outs with my BT chest strap (till now with software 6.0) that make 5X totally unusable for my workouts.
Even the BT link with my Nexus 6P is still disappointing after following the instructions provided by Garmin (mainly hard reset of the watch and unpairing with the phone).
Do not know whether this problem can be technically fixed by Garmin.
  • So you have dropouts with 5X? I thought it is limited to 5/5S only...
  • I got my F5 last week, all good apart from today.

Has as anyone had issues connecting to a Wahoo Kickr and Stages power meter over ant+?

F5 can see the the Kickr and power meter but will not connect to them.

Gaemin say it has nothing to do with them as they are 3rd party devices.

My edge connects fine to the devices though.

I believe the issue is not just model specific but also watch. I've seen reports of drop outs even with FR 935. My F5 is not totally drop out free but seems it's probably one of the better ones. Even GPS is quite good.

It's a basic silver model, but that might not be a deciding factor. Unless coating / sapphire glass affect signal somehow :)

Yep. Fenix 5 & 5S have significant issues with many 3rd party ANT+ devices that put out a weaker signal (even if that signal worked in the past with previous Garmin watches or products.) Fenix 5X has a different design for its antenna and does better, the plastic case of the 935 also allows the antenna inside to work better.

Stages is a known issue and I have never been able to get my Fenix 5S sapphire to work with Stages without massive dropouts. Garmin has worked on improving the ANT+ connection but has basically told industry insiders like DCRainmaker that the fundamental design is what it is and they can't correct it further this generation. I think they feel bad and it wasn't intentional and I suspect any future watches in the Fenix lineup will have better ANT+ antennas but sadly that won't help you with Stages today.

  • Thanks for the reply, would you say the 5x doesn?t drop put ant+ (Kickr etc)? If that?s the case is it worth me swapping the device for a 5x? Sure I can live without the stages for the mo.
  • There's definitely something wrong with ANT+ on my second HRM-Triciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1260484.png
  • I spoke with Garmin support this morning, they want me to try a run without using my footpod or Tempe to see if the dropouts are any better with no other sensors enabled. They wouldn't make comment on the number of users that are experiencing these issues or the number of posts on this forum, they also mention the third party CIQ apps could be an influence........

I get drops on my power meter when using the Fenix 5. Jury is out on the GPS but first impression is that it is not 100%. I can not quite believe that a flagship product can be released with such weaknesses.
  • Sold my 5s for a decent price and have gone back to a Polar v800, yes it's dated however, I don't have to worry about sensors not working correctly and poor GPS tracks also I don't buy the BS regarding GPS is inherently inaccurate the polar consistently puts me within a metre of where I ran. Thankfully got a great deal on the Polar so didn't lose out too much with the switch. Goodbye and good riddance Garmin probably forever.
