Problems with Ant+ connectivity

Does anybody NOT have problems with third party ANT+ devices and the F5? My experience is as follows:
- Stryd: not usable; tons of drop-outs on runs. Most importantly long pauses of 30-60s with zero values
- Powertap P1 pedals: around 10-20 drop-outs on a 50 mile ride; most of these drops are really short
- Stages: Useless - zero connectivity - tried Bluetooth and ANT+

Wondering if the F5 is just flawed (weak antennas?) or if I got a bad model. Spoke to Garmin support two weeks ago and they asked me to wait for further software updates.

Are there people out there that do not have these kind of problems?
  • I got my F5 last week, all good apart from today.

Has as anyone had issues connecting to a Wahoo Kickr and Stages power meter over ant+?

F5 can see the the Kickr and power meter but will not connect to them.

Gaemin say it has nothing to do with them as they are 3rd party devices.

My edge connects fine to the devices though.

I have the F5S and it connects with no problems to my Kickr and all my ANT+ devices (and I have a lot since I have 2 bikes with Vector PM and speed sensors). Connects to 3 different HRMs too. I do get an occasional dropout of power from my Kickr, but so does my Edge 510 and that started after the latest Kickr FW so I'm not blaming my Garmin devices. Not a big deal anyway. GPS seems good too. Not quite as good as my 920, but good enough.

I'm a little pissed off the Garmin Connect has started to default to elevation correction enabled. Didn't when I first got the F5S.
  • I spoke with Garmin support this morning, they want me to try a run without using my footpod or Tempe to see if the dropouts are any better with no other sensors enabled. They wouldn't make comment on the number of users that are experiencing these issues or the number of posts on this forum, they also mention the third party CIQ apps could be an influence........

I think Garmin are totally passing the buck by suggesting it's an issue with third party apps.
I picked up the RunScribe Plus footpods which are currently going through beta testing and by far the biggest issue has been with connections to the Fenix 5 watch. I can see why Stryd just gave up and pulled support for the F5.
The RunScribe datafield works without issue on almost every other Garmin watch, but we've been testing a multitude of changes to the pod firmware and data field app coding to see what can be done to reduce the dropouts on Fenix 5 watches and nothing seems to be making any real difference.

It really is shocking that such an expensive watch can have such a fatal flaw. I've never had an issue with my GPS tracks but this ant connection (and to a lesser degree the bluetooth) problem is frustrating beyond belief.

I've generally been quite supportive of Garmin's efforts to fix this issue but their lack of progress and general silence just smacks of shoddy design and a cover-up.

I'd be interested to know if anyone who has bought a Fenix 5 recently has had much success? If Garmin have quietly made some hardware revisions then I want to know so I can request an exchange through my place of purchase.

I got an HRM-Run a couple of weeks ago. Done some runs fine but today no data and ur was a VO2 max test so bloody useless. There is no cadence at all and none of the advanced running metrics. My HR is a max of at least 30 below what I know it was in the fast intervals and also put the rest of the run, I actually think the HR data might have come from the wrist (although that's been consistently accurate).

Will the HRM have stored the data? Is there a way to get it to send to the watch and sync?

I'm super unimpressed by this. It's thrown all my metrics out and my external training plan.

I manually connected the HRM-Run before starting my workout and it said connected.

    Laura
  • Laura that sounds like your HRM-Run hasn't been paired to the watch correctly.
When you go into the Run app after a few seconds the watch should buzz and notify you that it has connected to your sensor. You can confirm it's connected by peeking under you watch - if the green optical HR lights are still glowing then you haven't connected to the strap. The optical HR will turn off if you've connected.

Those results do sound like the watch was using wrist heart rate - it is fairly useless for intervals. But you can also get poor results from a chest strap if you put it on dry, but that wouldn't explain the lack of running dynamics data.
You do also need to be using the Run app - I'm pretty sure you won't get running dynamics if you use another activity type.

You say you manually connected the HRM-Run? How did you do that? Via "Add New Sensors"?

The HRM-Run doesn't store HR data - only the HRM-Tri and HRM-Swim do that.
  • but if chest strap gets disconnected, cadence should be taken from the wrist... So "no cadence" is somehow weird...

Carl, thanks for replying. Tried again tonight. I'm using an app (Train as One) which automatically pulls in workout steps. I wet and put on the HRM, then I went into settings to check it was connected in "Sensors and Accessories", where it said connected.

I then opened the app, downloaded my workout and chose activity type "run". I waited for gps signal then started my workout. Again no advanced running dynamics but I had tightened strap a little as intervals session and got ok HR data, probably wrist HR.

When I finished my workout and stopped the activity I got the alert for "External HRM connected".

Not sure how to get it to pick up before starting my workout. Maybe start and discard an activity?

Yup. Proper odd. No cadence at all. No advanced metrics and at least 5 minutes with no HR reading. Odd. That's why I found this thread!
  • Laura, from your post 2 above I'm a little unclear with App you are recording your run activities with. Are you using the Train as One app instead of the Run or Trail Run apps that are built in to the watch? (although I can't find anything called Train as One on a quick search of the CIQ store) You'll need to use the Fenix 5 native Run or Trail Run apps to record your runs if you want get Run Dynamics; it's easy to see if the HRM Run is connected in these apps as you ensure the Run Dynamics screens are enables in the Run/Train Run app settings, but these special RD data screens only show up when the app is open if the watch is connected to either a HRM Run or a RD Pod. I'm not aware of a CIQ app that will record Run Dynamics from a HRM Run or RD Pod and use of a third party CIQ app may even be messing with the source for heart rate and cadence too.

  • There is TrainAsOne app - I am using it
  • Ah, without the spaces, got it now https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/dfbebe0d-1cff-471d-afc0-3cb0be0c89c3#0 Not being familiar with that widget, I’m not clear how it uses/integrates with the native Run/Trail Run apps and how that might influence getting the RD Data Laura is missing. I assume it’s all working just fine for you meste7 or are you like me at the moment; focused on getting any RunScribe Plus connectivity and losing sight of everything else.... ;)
