Problems with Ant+ connectivity

Does anybody NOT have problems with third party ANT+ devices and the F5? My experience is as follows:
- Stryd: not usable; tons of drop-outs on runs. Most importantly long pauses of 30-60s with zero values
- Powertap P1 pedals: around 10-20 drop-outs on a 50 mile ride; most of these drops are really short
- Stages: Useless - zero connectivity - tried Bluetooth and ANT+

Wondering if the F5 is just flawed (weak antennas?) or if I got a bad model. Spoke to Garmin support two weeks ago and they asked me to wait for further software updates.

Are there people out there that do not have these kind of problems?
  • OnlyTwo, my HRM - Tri went back to Garmin today to be swopped out, I am seeing the same issues as you with my Fenix 5 Sapphire and HRM - Tri. Its probably not the chest strap but the watch, however I didn't want to send the watch back again (if it behaves the same with another HRM - Tri then I will be sending the watch back too).
  • New HRM - Tri arrived this week so I did my first run with it this morning, the dropouts are even worse than the previous unit.

  • Hi,

is this with v6 on watch? mine significantly improved with v6 (few minor drops during past few runs)

  • Hi,

Yes with V6. I haven't downloaded the latest Beta yet but the new strap is showing bigger gaps than the previous one.
  • rickj2903,

do you also have drop outs with the food pod or the Tempe sensor? Originally it started with the Stryd sensor, now it seems the TRI HRM's Running Dynamics transmits are also affected.

I'm having the most success with 5.83 beta, I've had no Stryd dropouts since I went back to using that

I am having issues with ANT+ connectivity using an HRM3-SS.
I called Garmin Support, and they did not acknowledge it could be an issue with the Fenix 5S so they've sent along an HRM4-Run to see if that also has connectivity issues.
I am disappointed because I would like to buy a Stryd, but not if it won't work with my watch.
Garmin Support asked me to call back if I still have issues with the ANT+ connections after I take the HRM4-Run for a few spins.

Has anyone found resolution in a replacement Fenix 5/5S? Or - are we still waiting for a firmware update?

Garmin are investigating my ANT+ issues after I refused a replacement watch (had 2 already)

however, I'm now back to running with 5.83 beta and haven't had a single dropout on my Stryd since

I don't have an HR strap to test but do have an RD pod which I'll be trying again soon (don't want to mess anything up until after my marathon on Sunday)

I'm not holding my breath that Garmin will do anything but I at least have a stable platform at the moment

I've been asked to provide a bit more info on rolling back to the 5.83 beta

now I don't take any responsibility for this but it's what I did and it worked for me

you can download the software from http://gawisp.com/perry/fenix_D2_tactix/ (look for fenix5_583Beta.zip)

I then just then followed the instructions on the beta webpage (http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=11663#Instruct) to roll back to 5.40 - this will wipe your settings though

once the watch was restarted I then followed the procedure on the beta webpage to install 5.83 (note even though 5.84 says it contains a fix for ANT+ stability issues I found it worse that 5.83)

once you have done this it is important that you turn off auto updates on the watch and set the Garmin express desktop app so it doesn't auto start otherwise your firmware will get updated the next time you connect

I then set the watch up how I wanted it again and installed the CIQ datafield and apps for Stryd and it's worked fine ever since

Garmin have just asked me to send them my FITs files from before I did this to investigate further - I'm not holding my breath!
  • This is the typical behaviour I got with my 5X and Polar H10 (see picture, red chart is the HR readout from Polar H10 with several dropouts).
That's why I moved to FR935 for my workouts without any single dropouts with my Polar H10.

You have drop-outs even with BT Smart strap? I thought it's related to ANT+ accessories only. At least I'm using my Polar H7 without single drop-out.
