No Turn by Turn on 5x with courses created on GC

Okay I have seen the screen shots from Garmin and others that display the arrow w/ distance to next turn in lower 1/3 of 5x. I have created several courses in GC via website and uploaded them to 5x nothing other than a bread crumb to navigate along, and lower 1/3 just gives distance to finish.

When I create a round trip course on the watch I at least get a direction arrow on the bread crumb of which way to turn.

Going to try a "ride with GPS" course tonight and see what happens. I did discovered that it appears you can't upload a "ride with gps" .tcx file into your new files folder on the 5x seems that it will only import gpx.

We will see what the story is tonight with turn by turn created on Ride with GPS...... I know that garmin connect sucks for creating courses on my Edge 520 too, must of the time I don't get turn by turn on the 520 either.

Amy I doing something wrong or is Garmin?

  • How to plot your own courses very quickly. I discovered two ways of doing this:

    1. routeCourse - free app, which allows you to transfer up a plotted course from your phone. Works brilliantly and very quickly. $10 yearly subscription is worth it for being able to save courses in an archive and get turn by turn navigation.

    2. Wikiloc - free app on garmin but requires $10 a year subscription to use with the garmin (1 free test). You get access to a plethora of walks which are searchable from your phone. You then 1 cilck send it to your garmin. Also excellent
  • I have created several courses in GC, however when selecting the course in navigating it is stuck on 'calculating'.

I am using the bike profile and use the EU cycling map. I have set Routing to 'use map'.

Does anybody have an idea how to fix this?

Happened to me once, so I can't say whether what worked for me is repeatable. It was stuck on "calculating" for several minutes. After waiting for several minutes, I started the run, immediately stopped the run, then I waited for 30s while on the resume, save, discard, etc. option screen, and I felt the watch buzz letting me know calculating was complete while on that screen. It may have been a coincidence with respect to timing. I was about to discard the run, and try loading the course again. Given that I've only does this one, I'll have to wait and see if I get the calculating screen for a long time again, and then try this same routine to see if it works or not.

Mine spent three full songs on the phone (so at least 7-8 minutes) stuck on "calculating" for a a 24 km route on Saturday, but eventually buzzed and follwed the route flawlessly when I eventually set off.
