No Turn by Turn on 5x with courses created on GC

Okay I have seen the screen shots from Garmin and others that display the arrow w/ distance to next turn in lower 1/3 of 5x. I have created several courses in GC via website and uploaded them to 5x nothing other than a bread crumb to navigate along, and lower 1/3 just gives distance to finish.

When I create a round trip course on the watch I at least get a direction arrow on the bread crumb of which way to turn.

Going to try a "ride with GPS" course tonight and see what happens. I did discovered that it appears you can't upload a "ride with gps" .tcx file into your new files folder on the 5x seems that it will only import gpx.

We will see what the story is tonight with turn by turn created on Ride with GPS...... I know that garmin connect sucks for creating courses on my Edge 520 too, must of the time I don't get turn by turn on the 520 either.

Amy I doing something wrong or is Garmin?

Do you have the cycling map enabled? Are you doing a cycling activity or running?
The included topo map of 100k is not a turn by turn enabled map. The included cycling one is, however, but I'm not sure it's turn by turn for any activity you choose.
  • Is routing set to "Follow Course" or "Use Map?" I've had a few conversations with the good folks at Garmin Support, and through those calls and my own experimentation, I've discovered that turn-by-turn directions requires that the routing be set to Use Map. If routing is set to "Follow Course," the map will only show the distance to the end. If "Use Map" is selected, the 5X will essentially interpret the GC course through the map, allowing it to determine turns, and then be able to display the distance to the next turn.

In the week+ I've had the 5X I've followed several different courses that I've made through GC, and I think the routing through "Use Map" is pretty good, with a few caveats:
    • Routes that essentially go straight are inconsistent with notifications even if road names change or there's an ambiguous forks in the path
    • Multiple turns in quick succession can cause the watch not to provide notice of the second turn
    • Sometimes the process of interpreting the GC course places a bunch of markers on the map, which when combined with other existing map markers can make the turns difficult to see
  • Thanks for the replies,

So I checked and I have all three of the stock maps enabled:
    Worldwide DEM base map NR
    Too US 100k
    Garmin Cycle map

And by trying the toggles, I can see that the cycle maps looks to be the best for city streets.

Okay I tried the GC course to the 5x again, and I got turn by turn this time but the course was littered with blue pins (i am guessing waypoints) Turn by turn displays them as via points, about 25 on a 1.5 mile course... and they cause the 5x to vibrate like mad. So now I need to figure out how to get rid of all the via points.

Intuitive routing on this thing is not!

Under routing settings, what is the activity selected? I found in my testing that if the activity is set to pedestrian, then there are fewer via points and the routing is more what you would expect (vibrations only at turns). If the activity is set to one of the many cycling modes, then I found that I got a lot more via points, blue pins, and unhelpful vibrations with messages like "Left at via point 500 feet." My guess is that this is because Garmin assumes that if you're biking, then the turns may be physically spaced further apart so the via points might be helpful; if you're on your feet, then Garmin reduces the number of total messages because the turns might be closer in distance (just my guess). Because you're only going 1.5 miles, I'm guessing that you're running and not biking, so see what the activity is set to under the routing settings under the activity's navigation settings. If it's cycling, try changing it to pedestrian. Note that this doesn't change the map that the navigation uses - the activity can be pedestrian and the map will stay as the US Cycling Map for routing purposes.

    Routing settings

How do you change routing settings from "Follow Route" to "Use Map"?
  • How do you change routing settings from "Follow Route" to "Use Map"?

it can be set in " Routing" of the respective activity (go to settings of the activity)
  • So I tried to use the routing facility yesterday on a 55 mile road bike ride. I loaded a GPX course from ridewithgps onto the watch anf then went to bikes > long press onto navigation > courses select the course, wait for it to load and then press start. This all worked as expected. Only small niggle why can't we load TCX courses as well.

My expectation was that the F5X would the same as on the Garmin Edge 1000, which after course selection and pressing start the course automatically gives you TBT notifications. However I got no TBT directions, it did show me the route on the map, but this is not very helpful when riding and trying to look at the watch to confirm I am still on the track not to say a little dangerous when my eyes should be mainly on the road.

I hadn't read the previous post regarding "use map" which I will try today, however this appears all very confulted method when many more button presses when compared to the Edge series.
  • If you want to load a TCX course then convert it to a FIT file first using McBadger tool (http://runningbadger.blogspot.co.uk/2015/08/a-tool-to-help-with-navigation-on.html).
Then drop the FIT file into the newfiles folder on your cable connected F5X.

With a gpx course it is the watch that puts in the turns.
With a tcx course from ridwithgps (and converted to fit) you will have yourn own predetermined turns; those critical ones rather than a whole bunch of others you don't want.
  • So, a quick update, using the activity Walk and setting up as "use map" the TBT worked up on a normal tarmac footpath or sidewalk for our American friends, however as soon as I followed a OS footpath the directions stopped.

More testing and variants required but for me Garmin need to simply the process as in the Edge series.
  • stuck on 'calculating'

I have created several courses in GC, however when selecting the course in navigating it is stuck on 'calculating'.

I am using the bike profile and use the EU cycling map. I have set Routing to 'use map'.

Does anybody have an idea how to fix this?
