[Q] Navigating / following GPX track - elevation options - Question to 5x users

Hey folks,
I'm considering upgrading my F3 but would like to clarify one option that I'd really need.

When on mountain ultra races I always take with me a handheld GPSMap 62s and basically use it for two reasons:
1) occasionally check if i'm still on track (i don't use any navigation, I simply let the device draw the gpx track on a topo map and show my current location / track)

2) If I do use navigation (following a gps track), gpsmap62s has a nice option to automatically generate waypoints (trackpoints?) defined by highs and lows on a elevation plot. This is really usefull as I can check how much of an ascent is in front of (till the nearest high point) or how long will the descent be.

Is Fenix 5X capable of doing point #2?
Can one put a gpx track let the device to it's caltulations and then see how long is the current ascent (data field), how many meters are left (data field) and so on?

I'd buy th e 5X for my nearest race if thats possible and happyly leave the bulky gpsmap62s at home.

Thanks for any info.
  • Hi there,
to clarify what I'm looking for is this (screenshots from my GPSMap62s):

I loaded a gpx (with 4 waypoints added by me - they are visible as flags and point to drinking statiosn) and the device calculated Highs and Lows automatically:

correspoing points are marked on map:

GpsMap62s is smart enough to catch all major highs and lows:

And it can show distance to next (in this case all those highs/lows) while navigatiing / following:

It can do "distance to next waypoint", and this is actually found in the "navigation" field not the "distance" field. However, it cannot scan a GPX file and automatically create waypoints on the highs and lows. If you create a GPX file at a computer or using your other GPS device, then import that into the watch, it will display the waypoints.

It can create a graph showing elevation data of what's been walked but not what is to be walked.

I have barely started writing my final review of this watch but if you scroll down to the six pictures, you will see a map on the fifth picture. This is the default map with an additional map (you can layer maps) that shows contours and if that map has the altitude, it will show it on the screen. For example, you can see it says "30". Using that information, plus the scale at the bottom, you would be able to roughly calculate what kind of distance you have ahead of you.
  • Philip, thank you both for answering and rephrasing my question so it hopefully makes more sense :)

It can do "distance to next waypoint", and this is actually found in the "navigation" field not the "distance" field.

It does so while computing the real distance (on a given track) or a straight line based non-sense distance?

It can create a graph showing elevation data of what's been walked but not what is to be walked.

I'm not sure if I understand. Even F3 can draw an elevation plot for an uploaded track and follow this plot while navigating - showing both, what's been walked and what is to be walked.

No problem :). I'm pretty sure it measures the distance from the track in the GPX file as it is, so it would be the real distance. I'm not 100% certain and hopefully someone else can comment on this but I highly doubt it measures it as a straight line.

In regards to the elevation graph, I got a bit confused there, my bad.
